New “Forage Only” Complete Feed

I switched this summer from the Standlee alfalfa pellets, which I’d fed for years, to their teff pellets. The teff pellets are tiny, and soften in a minute or two in cold water (our well water is 65F to 67F year round). Here are links to the respective pages on the Standlee website, there is a nutrition tab on each:

Thank you! I actually am going to try the alfalfa / timothy pellets next. Just picked up a bag. My guy is super picky so I was trying to stick with something alfalfa based in the hopes he will eat it.

My horse loves these. I remembered @clanter saying his horses really like teff hay, and decided to try the pellets. I picked up some at a feed store grand opening, where a Standlee rep noticed them in my cart and comped me a bag. When I told him my horse had been recently diagnosed with PPID, he said the teff pellets were the better choice for my horse (compared to the alfalfa).

Best wishes with your horse!

Bluebonnet also has the ingredients on their website.

Yes I know. I preferred feeding the straight alfalfa, so I only fed one bag of this. I got it because of the soak factor. But the ingredients seem more like a hay stretcher. He wasn’t fully cleaning them up, so that was another reason to not stick with them.

The Unbeetable Forage only pellets (alfalfa, flax and beet pulp) are soft and soak very easily.
(I have not tried any of their other products)

suggest that you also sign up at Standlee for their coupon offers that will be emailed

they have various offers during the year that actually are worthwhile

My mare doesn’t love the Forage Only. She needs “grain” only to disguise her VMS and other supplements. I’m trying this next:

Yeh my guy wasn’t thrilled with it either. Lol now I’m stuck with a barely used bag

I’m too cheap to let it go to waste so I top it off with a handful of TCS to get her to eat it.

Lol I’m pretty cheap too so I’ve been sneaking handfuls in :joy:

I had two bags of the Forage Only delivered from Chewy on Monday. I swapped it out for my horse’s beet pulp and alfalfa. It is a dense pellet (weighs the same as the alfalfa pellets). We’re soaking because he eats like its his last meal, and used to it anyway from the beet pulp. I’m interested to see how he does on it! He’s not picky so I hope not to have issues with taste.

I noticed Chewy finally has the Forage Only, but it says it’s out of stock. It’s also the same price as TSC. My local TSC has been pretty consistent about keeping this in stock. I’m really, really impressed with how well my horse and the mare I take care of are doing on it. They both love it and look amazing (perhaps a touch too plump, but I’ll blame that on recently upping their hay since the pasture is starting to dwindle a bit.)

It’s good stuff, IMO.

Anyone have a horse suddenly stop eating the Forage Only? I switched in October, and it worked well for my guy. He really thrived on it.

He’s always been a great eater (bordering on pushy about food). Now suddenly he’s decided he doesn’t like the Unbeetable. I tried soaked (his normal), wet, and dry. Alfalfa and beet pulp plain are fine, other grain is fine, but he’ll try to eat around the Forage Only to get to his ration balancer. Super weird and disappointing since I really liked him on it.

I had this problem a little. I liked the product a lot more than my ancient pony did. She’s 33 and has decided she wants only alfalfa and sweet feed. She ate it at first and then went to “nah.” At her age, her wish is my command. I switched to the chopped hay because soaking is not feasible here (too cold and she takes all day to eat off and on in her private paddock).

I still have a very enthusiastic customer! He’s not particularly picky though.

Mine isn’t either - he actually is a bit of a bottomless pit when it comes to food and it surprised me. I’ve never found something he wouldn’t eat before!

I recently switched my horse to the Forage Only, as he dumped and wasted most of his feed with the 2 low NSC feeds I had tried him on previously. (Picture as evidence )
He dumped the Forage Only the first few times I gave it to him, but when I started adding more water he eats it slowly but hasn’t been wasting very much.
He lives in a herd situation so I need to pull him out and wait while he eats

Well so much for that. Today he didn’t dump his grain, but did quit eating with the bucket still half full. :woman_shrugging:

I may have said this before, but none of my horses was impressed with Forage Only… And they are usually garbage disposals. I tried one bag and moved on.

I know it’s more expensive, but they go NUTS over Standlee Smart Carb. Absolutely nuts.
