Nope. I’d return it.
No way I’d use it, especially after that response.
And yes, my helmet gets replaced at five years post manufacture date.

The deterioration mostly occurs internally, you wouldn’t be able to see it. There’s been plenty of research done on how the materials degrade over time and with exposure to the elements, chemicals, impacts, etc. 5 years is just a guideline but it’s not arbitrary. I really don’t get why anyone would risk a TBI when you can get a new helmet for ~$100.
These are on bike helmets but they have the best pictures I could find, and its the same EPS material:
Thanks for this. Son just took his bike to college and reading this made me question how old his bike helmet is. He definitely got it pre pandemic, so it’s time.
I’ll get him a new one, thanks to your reminder.
I guess I was stupid with my equestrian helmet. When I stopped driving, it was about 18 years old. I won’t replace it since I don’t use it any more–haven’t driven a horse since 2016. My bike helmet should be replaced in a year. I’ve had it since around 2019. It’s never taken a hit and I ride an adult trike, but still: if I’m going to bother wearing it (and I always do, because cars), then it should be effective.

So if I buy a helmet in 2023 that was manufactured in 2020… It’s good til 2028?
What if it’s a show helmet only used occasionally?
I’ve generally rotated my show helmet into being my everyday helmet after say 3 years. My everyday helmet is usually disgusting by then, washable liner or not.
I go by manufacturer date so.I’mma be ticked if I’ve been flushing my money…
I am careful with my helmet, no drops. I replaced it two years ago when my pony tripped and somersaulted at the canter, I got essentially trebuchet’ed (sp) off and whacked the crapola out of my head. RIP CO GR8, and dammit those are not cheap. Tossed it immediately and ordered a new one and checked the date as soon as it arrived, and it was pretty new because CO just swapped to removable liners.
