I have a foxtrotter named Robin Williams
We had Tom, Pepper, Moby, (Monition Boy), Major and James.
Tommy the Tank Engine, Pepe Le Pew, Moby Dick, Major Disaster and James Bond (his brand was 007)

I’m kind of a chicken, but my confidence in the saddle is a thousands times greater than on the ground (cause I’m very short). So in those situations I hop on and ride as quickly as possible, as much as possible. That builds enough relationship that I become more confident from the ground.
I also bring a buddy the first several times I handle a new horse. It helps me feel safer to know I have a backup helper. That confidence helps me instill confidence in the horse. Things go smoother. Don’t be afraid to ask a barn buddy or friend to shadow you for a bit. Horse are dangerous. It’s not dumb to try to be as safe as possible when handling them.
Also, those big guys are always the sweetest it seems. Now my pony…
