"new way" to estimate collar size

I was poking around the internet and saw this little tidbit

It was NOT on a site that “i” would call driving oriented, so I have my doubts
AND
“i” have never heard this mentioned before

How to measure a horse for a collar: The old way: is to take 2 straight edges place 1 on top of neck and 1 on bottom of neck parallel to the shoulder blade, measuring between the 2 straight edges in a straight line. This should give you a close measurement for a collar.

THE NEW WAY: Measure the circumference (widest spot on the horses front leg, usually under the arm pit). This should give you the collar size within a inch or so. When fitting a horse with a collar there should not be any more space between the horse’s neck and throat of the collar than will allow your fingers, when laid flat on the inside, to pass through freely.

So now Im curious and will have to test it on our boys

We’ve been thinking of trying a collar with our Alex as he has a very low neck set at the chest

We picked up a draft collar very cheap (nice collar but its brown leather so not desirable for the Amish market)
Just need to get some hames that fit to try out the collar

I had heard this several years ago. I think it will get you close. But I can look at a horse and tell you within a couple of inches as to the size. I have 2 horses that will change from an 18" with a small pad to a 16" depending on his level of condition. He is a welsh qh cross and varies all over. His weight doesn’t change much but his neck does. My little grey ponies also change 2 inches in size. It is crazy to think that a single measurement can mean more than it is close. That is like telling someone that rides the measurement from the nostril to the eye will determine the saddle fit. LF

I’d never have said that was a “new way”
