NEWBIE IN NYC- WHERE TO RIDE?
Knoll Farm is considerably further East. There is also Stanhope and Thomas School of Horsemanship in the Huntington area but that may even be out of your one hour time frame for the commute. Stanhope, like Knoll Farm does offer H/J but they are primarily Dressage oriented.

Anything east of Huntington will be more than an hour commute.
Just an update — while the owner of Stanhope rides dressage, I would say the barn itself is 60/40 in favor of H/J. Should it ever stop raining, the outdoor jump ring is huge!

Does anyone have updates on trainers local to the NYC tri-state area? I’ve tried to do a search on NYC and it seems to be crashing the forum. Bringing a horse up from VA and looking for a barn within an hour of NYC that has turnout. Will reach out to the folks noted in this thread, but if anyone has additional ideas, please let me know.

Anything accessible from Brooklyn for under a $30 round trip commute (train/bus/cab or car)? I’m calculating all of these train/cab and/or gas/toll costs and most of them are adding up to the $50 range. The commute is practically going to be more expensive than the lessons!

Icy - Would need to know your price range to give helpful suggestions, but what’s close to the city will be more expensive than venturing out to NJ or some parts of Long Island. If you’re not that picky about the facilities (i.e.: don’t need an indoor), you’ll have more affordable options.

French Fry - I would try looking at barns close to the Metro North or LIRR stations. For Westchester, there’s more options the farther north you go but that also means more time and money on the train. I know Fox Hill and Twin Lakes are both close to the train, but I think both have somewhat lower level (probably under 2’6") lesson programs.

Fox Hill also has Riverstone North with brothers Kim and David Perlman leasing two barns. They go to shows, and Jane Grenci from Fox Hill does some of the teaching at home when they are away. Great trainers, great horse care. Easily accessible from NYC. Ridden with them for 18 years,

I need to keep it under $2000 for board/care. Would be great if that included training as well, but I know it is a stretch without driving further. Turnout is a #1 priority and an indoor would be nice because I don’t envision FL being a possibility.

While I like smaller barns, I would consider something larger with more Jr and AA riders. I would love to find a Jr or AA that would like to do an in barn share/lease because I only have the time to ride twice a week and show every few months.

Fox Hill would probably be the closest to the city for what you want. I boarded there awhile back and was pleased with the care - I know they’ve done some upgrading and as others mentioned have some new trainers as well. Anything in North Salem will probably be just at the hour drive mark depending on the traffic, but there are more options up there.

When you say “has turn-out”, what exactly are you contemplating? Many of the show barns in Westchester (within an hour of the city in particular) do offer turn-out, but maybe not as much as you might be familiar with in Virginia – typically more like a few hours a day as opposed to all day.

I’d like over 5hrs per day. Most have quoted 2 hrs which is not going to work.

Cheaper for you to rent a small car like a Kia, and pay for NYC garage to keep it, than to train/cab it everyday.

Buy my farm!!! All day turnout would be an option for you here!

Just so the OP knows, although there are farms in Fairfield County (Stamford and north) you can’t get from the train station to them by public transportation. Good long drives from Stamford train, or any train stop in FFd County.

To echo the first poster in the thread, does anyone here know someone - or is someone - who would be open to carpooling? I’m moving to NYC next month, and sadly won’t be bringing a car or a horse with me. I’ll definitely check out the places mentioned that are accessible by public transit, but I’d love to be able to pick a place based on school horses rather than accessibility.

With that said, I’d love to know if any of the barns close to the train have amazing school horses!

CatOnAHorse, you have a PM.

i would eliminate Knoll Farm in that case although it is across the street from the train station. And commuting to LI sucks anyway, I think you are better off looking in NJ/CT/Westchester. Has anyone mentioned Redfield Farm? A number of COTHers car pool to lessons there.

I boarded in Westchester for years, first at Stratford and then at Donegal (Shannon Stables) with Lisa Rex. Both are great for different things. Horse is semi-retired now in northwestern NJ at a fabulous place that requires taking the train to Westchester, borrowing a car from brother and family, and driving out 1.5 hours each way.

It’s very, very hard to ride consistently and cheaply without a car. Depending on what level you are, people on this board rave about lessons at Redfield in New Jersey. I, for one, would be interested in splitting a ZipCar with someone. Maybe we can start a separate PM/thread for people interested in carpooling to lessons based on level, budget, etc.?

I would love to! but it is not really commutable to NYC :frowning:

It would be long, but there is a train station nearby and I have a neighbor who does it…but I totally get it! There are literally tons of great places in Westchester to ride. I used to ride at a lovely farm in North Salem and we would take turns driving people from the city to and from the train. Best of luck!

Besides Redfields are there any barns that the group would recommend in New Jersey?
