I think this is a pretty common presentation. Not all ulcers will heal with PPI treatment, but raising the pH of the stomach could absolutely make them more comfortable to live with. Taper the PPI, the stomach gets more acidic, the ulcers become more painful.
There are a lot of very straightforward ulcer cases out there that turn around with a simple course of Nexium or compounded omeprazole. It’s a reasonable thing to try. But when it doesn’t work, more investigation is the path forward…go take a look at what you’re facing.
