I knew I had read something on COTH about how white markings are formed, so I looked it up. Here is is if anyone is interested! I am certainly no genetics/breeding expert, but based on this thread I would think that clones could have different markings since they are based on how color pigment travels in the forming of the embryo.
Here’s an interesting possibility that may be part of an answer to my question about what traits Jorst wanted to reproduce. This is from the Vanity Fair article (above):

60 minutes did a story on the cloned polo pony. She was a mare named Cuerta(sp). It’s a really good story you could probably find in their archives. He names all the clones Cuerta with a number

I saw a 39 vs 40 goal polo game in Buenos Aires a few years ago. On one of the teams, all the players were siblings or cousins and almost all that team’s polo ponies were clones!

I am surprised whoever is running Glock these days hasn’t tried to get Totilas clones, esp. since they have millions of $$$ to play with. Although they would no doubt have had to get the cells from Schockemoehle - which makes me wonder if PS had any of Toto’s cells harvested and stored before he passed.
I also am not sure how the various registries feel about clones. At one point, most or all of the major European WB registries forbade them, but I don’t know if that has changed. And if they can’t be registered, that may affect the ability to compete them in certain categories - although that may have also changed in recent years.
Well the players in the polo pony cloning production are now all suing each other about who owns the rights to the genetic material. Maybe Glock doesn’t want to get involved with that. There are a lot of approved sons of Totilas out there and the philosophy is breeding forward so maybe it is not financially attractive.

Yes. There are 3.
Sapphire has a few clones, and I remember reading a COTH article where Blue Chip Bloodstock (who owned Sapphire, and owns her clones) talked about how they were aiming to replicate Sapphire’s upbringing as much as possible. I think her clones competed a few times but have mostly been bred.
It is super fascinating to see how the genetics play out. Personally, I think cloning is a unique opportunity to preserve really impressive genetics (as in a mare who competed late into her career, or a a horse who was gelded), but don’t view it as a way to produce a sure-fire winning competition horse.
I’m interested in seeing the development of a clone trained in a more benevolent, horse friendly way than the original was before CJ.
I remember seeing a TB with white fronts only. I thought it was unusual. The horse was in a high end yearling sale but I don’t remember which one.
