Nosebands

In the COTH article on bling at WEF this winter many of the horses have similar nose bands, which I love.

The site is: http://www.chronofhorse.com/article/splashes-color-and-bits-bling-agdf

The nose bands (wide in the center, lower on the top and bottom – almost like piping) can be seen on the following horses:

Elise Tzinberg
Spain’s Juan Antonio <----- my very favorite
Steffen Peters
Diana Porsche
Leida Collins-Strijk

Can anyone tell me where to get a nose band like these?

Thanks.

PS: I also like the earmuffs which have the ‘blingy brow band’ sewn onto the ear bonnets

passier, stubben - ‘lined nosebands’.

i loved the article and the pictures, but it was really disheartening seeing how tight those nosebands were.

^^^This! When you can see a wide leather noseband digging into the face of a horse, in an area that doesn’t have any fat/muscle/padding, you KNOW that sucker has been pulled tight!! Juan Antonio’s horse is the easiest to see this.

Hurts to look at :frowning:

Juan Antonio’s horse is not shaved. What you see is the hair coming up… Come on…

A lot of brands do offer that: Hennig, Passier, Sommer, Vespucci…

You should check : Devoucoux and Otto Schumacher

not to be combative, but that is not the only tight noseband in the bunch. i wasn’t singling anyone. just pointing out the universal rule seemed to be “tight as possible”. are you telling me the cranked nosebands are not a problem?

You do realise that there are stewards that check the tightness of nosebands after every rides?

My post was in reaction to Lusoluv comment but No, I don’t see a problem with any of the crank nosebands shown in this article.

So many nice bridles out there, but my horse does not wear a flash. The pickins’ are really restricted.

Right now I have a schooling bridle that has a ‘pocket’ on the front of the noseband (really just a place without stitching) that I can (and do) push the flash tab up into so it cannot be seen when not in use.

Does any manufacturer of top quality show bridles have an option like this?

Le sigh. Nothing is easy.

Bobby’s makes a French or crank noseband with no flash. You could likely buy a stand alone noseband.

Don’t faint at the prices, esp for the Passier and OS items!

Nunn Finer just came out with this.

Devoucoux’s dressage bridle has that “flash insert”

In our region, there’s usually a leather guy at most of the shows–I’ve taken multiple bridles to one guy (possibly the guy that travels with Horse of Course–could be wrong). They just unstitch, take the flash tab out, and re-stich. Can’t tell it was ever there. I’ve had it done either for free or very, very cheap each time.

Lets not pretend that some dressage horses don’t have their nosebands cranked down. Not all, but they’re out there.

OP, you can find these nosebands at dressage specialty stores, such as Dressage Extensions online and certainly down in florida. Typically, they come with the double bridle but you can buy them separately. Most are crank nosebands, which mean they have a padded segment under the jaw and a leather strap that doubles back on itself through a metal loop. Obviously, you can use the leverage to “crank” the jaw shut, but realistically, it’s a really cushy, well padded noseband for horses. You can also find crank nosebands on regular dressage snaffle bridles and you can either just remove the flash noseband or some people have a leather worker remove the flash loop, too. Different brands and styles have different amounts of padding.

HorseofCourse definitely will do this for you at shows.

PS of Sweden makes beautiful bridles with crown pieces and nose bands that are really anatomically shaped for comfort. The flash attachment goes on and off completely - no little tabs sticking out when you take it off. For pictures see Jacqueline Brooks and D Niro.

thanks. I was really surprised by the obtuseness evidenced any time tight nosebands were mentioned in any threads… they’re out there. I’ve been a ring steward PLENTY of times and have seen and witnessed some very tightly shut noses.

OP, germane to the topic, but I saw an OS in a tack store last week that had a noseband very similar to Juan’s. I flipped through Dressage Extension and on page 57 found two that are similar: #20897 and 20892.

I like the noseband of Kasey Perry-Glass’ horse. It looks wider in the middle across the nose, and tapers to the sides. Would love to find it in a padded, square raised style, (like the one on Juan Antonia’s Sunny Boy) instead of the round raised. But I’d be happy with either, if I could find it!

try looking up “recessed bit rings” - it’s what it looks like to me. may be wrong but that style was in the DE catalog as well (widest thru nose, narrowest thru cheek/sides).

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have seen the Passier nosebands with the cut back for the bit rings. I don’t care for them because they are humongous wide, around 2" across the bridge.

For some reason I thought Dobert had a noseband closer to the tapered look, but I haven’t found one yet. The new OS bridles for 2016 will have something like the Passier shape, from looking at their online catalog. Still, not what I want.

Jerry’s also does as bridle with a flash attachment. It’s a loop that goes over the noseband and has slits for the flash. Easy to use, looks normal when flash is used, and when you want to remove it, you just undo it and the noseband is unblemished.

Schlockenmoel has snaffle bridles with all sorts of nosebands available. I have one with a dropped noseband. Not terribly expensive either. (but def. not cheap) But then it did come with reins…
