Thanks for that info. Odd though, I was told that Fibregized Omega would not be changing, but the Ultra Seniors Energized Choice would be changing.
Just to clarify…per the Cargill rep…they mill Nutrena, Pennfields, Triple Crown, and Progressive Nutrition

I feed fibregized to two of my horses… BUT do be careful with it because it can cause choke pretty easily. I cannot feed it to several of my horses for that reason, and I know others who have had major choke issues with it (also covered on COTH if you do a search).
I also feed Pennfield Ultra Broodmare, which is being replaced by another feed with a higher protein content. I am not very happy about it and likely will use something other than the new nutrena.

All I know is that I was told by my feed dealer (Tri-County Feeds in Marshall, VA) of 20+ years that the feed I have used made by Pennfield would be changing. That Pennfield was purchaced by Nutrena.
All I know. I had bad experiences with Nutrena in the past, so I was/am concerned.
From what you say…if Cargill owns both or all, then perhaps they were just giving me a heads up that Nutrena will be milling now and changing the feeds.
There are many companies that buy and then own others, but they keep the subsidiary company in place and doing their thing. I suspect that is what happened with Pennfield since you say Cargill bought them. They kept the “brand” and changed nothing re milling.
But what I’m learning now is that Nutrena is taking over the formulation and milling. That’s what I’m trying to get my arms around.
Since you already have a relationship with Tri-county, have you tried their in-house Hi-Fybe Plus feed? I switched from Fibergized Omega and have never looked back!

Thanks, I will be looking at their line as well.
I don’t recall the old Fibregized being 14 percent protein, but maybe I am wrong. I thought it was 12 percent. Does anyone know? I hate it when things change!
Fibregized Omega was 13.5 percent protein and 11.75 percent fat. Fibregized was 13 percent protein and 10.75 percent fat.
It looks like Nutrena has done away with everything but some version of the Fibregized Omega (with 16% NSC rather than 12%) and the “Ultra” concept, but none appear to be exact replicas of the originals. Then again I’m not sure how up-to-date the Pennfield website was before they took it down.

A few months before Pennfield was sold to Cargill, KER ended their partnership with Pennfield. The feed formulas DID change slightly at the time because KER had proprietary rights to them. Pennfield could not legally continue to make the exact same feed.
If you were buying Pennfield simply because of the KER affiliation, they are now allied with Southern States’ Legend feed line.
The result for KER being that they now produce and market their own feed formulas. (Milled in equine only plants.) I can’t tell you how much I love KER feed and customer service. When I had a nutritional question I ended up talking with their vets about it.
If you want to explore other options check and see if you can get KER feeds locally.
Thanks. I’ll do that. Yes, I love KER as well and was on the phone with them years ago when they hung there shingle out and needed answers.
In the interim, I’ve switch to Tri-County(local) feed/horse store that developed their own feed for the VA Piedmont area and put some proceeds from sales back into preserving this wonderful, old VA horse country.
I got the guy that used to work for Pennfield on the phone and he gave me the differences between the Pennfield I was feeding (Fibregized Omega and Senior) with Tri County’s, which is significantly less expensive.
Tri County’s has less biotin, selenium and a couple of amino acids…it’s the added goodies that can drive up the price/bag.
Since I feed Microvet, as my horses can never take a full ration of what any horse feed says to feed on the bag (make more $$…lol!), to balance their vita/mins and micro goodies, I’m covered on those. And I’m not paying higher prices for 4-color fancy bags, which also drives the cost of feed up (marketing).
Just a heads up.
If KER ever produces their own feed line, I’ll be the first on the list to check it out.
Sid, be sure to also talk to Lindsey Williamson at CFC Farm & Home. She is BRILLIANT, with a science background, and turned us onto Tribute brand feeds when Pennfield went bellyup and ABSOLUTELY changed their formulas a few years ago. My horses look and feel tremendous, and my absolute hardest keeper, who would sorta eat Fibregized Omega (the grain from ANYONE she was most inspired by, and was still only lukewarm about), absolutely inhales Kalm Peformer.
Tribute feeds contain, among other wonderful things, a microencapsulated probiotic, so it makes it into the hindgut. Tell Lindsey I sent you. She’s terrific, and can tell you both about Tribute as well as CFC’s own line of feed that was formulated by… KER. Call her.
Thanks, Diosa…will do. Microvet (vet only available) does have very good probiotics as well.
But I will check it out. I have a lot of VERY old dressage horses who worked hard, so I suspect I’ve been doing most everything right.
They’ve been on Microvet since they were weanings…all in great weight in their old age. No gut issues as they live a life out on pasture and come in for work or only if there is a tornado warning or 4 ’ of snow coming.
Thanks for the connection. Appreciate it.

KER has been producing their own feed since they ended their relationship with Pennfields a few years ago.
Y’all can talk about expensive feeds and I’m sure KER is near the top of the heap. BUT, a couple years ago I transitioned an newly purchased significantly underweight horse from 15 lbs a day of Purina Race Ready plus an all he could eat buffet of beet pulp a day to 10 lbs of Releve plus 1/2 lb of their ration balancer and in one month put 80 pounds on him according to my vets scale. (The KER vets recommended we slow down!) After the first month I had him on less than 1/2 of what he was eating of the cheap Purina stuff. If you are feeding half the amount it is very economical to pay a premium for the good stuff.
Didn’t know that. Thanks. Looks like it is not available in my area.
