Nyquist out of the Belmont

I think that if I was training Nyquist (if only!) I would welcome some time, with less pressure, to school him on riding the rail and having horses on his off side. That veering thing I’ve seen him do at least three times must cost him several lengths. I’m not sure he does it because he’s tiring, or because he is reacting to the crowd or track conditions or what. But, certainly, it would be nice to help him acquire some additional racing “tools” for the late summer and fall races. His competition will be older and wiser, and so must he.

With the exception of 9/26/15, Nyquist has always had at least 30 days between races. He’s never run back in just 2 weeks. The race set up perfectly for Exaggerator and Kent rode the best race.

Bill Shanklin had some interesting thoughts on the race and future for Nyquist.

Out of the 45,000 odd races run every year in the US, you could count on both your hands the number of races run at 12f on dirt.
You would need only one hand for the number of G1s, and not every finger either.
So yes, it is an an obscure distance, and it always has been an obscure distance, despite the false nostalgia of some posters on these forums. There was never a time when 12f on dirt was a common or popular distance at any level of US racing.

As an earlier poster pointed out, when there is no Triple Crown on the line, other than the $1.5m purse, there is little to no upside to winning the Belmont, it doesn’t add much to a stallion’s stud value resume.

Doug O’Neill isn’t scared to run in New York. He shipped Goldencents and several others to NY in 2014 and came home with only one drug positive.

Seemed like the most likely thread to post this.

Nyquist’s next start…

In CA in the San Diego 'cap against Chrome?
At Monmouth (forget the race)?
At Saratoga in the Jim Dandy?

TVG’s question of the day yesterday

Not the Travers?

Not the Travers?[/QUOTE]

As I recall, TVG asked about the Jim Dandy but I’m open for discussion on where you’d run him next

Monmouth might have been the Haskell, I don’t recall.

Not sure I’d put him up against Chrome in CA…

It is definite.
