NYT article on PETA undercover in Asmussen's barn

I think it’s stating the obvious that most industries - not just racing - tend to protect their own and turn a blind eye on things that aren’t quire right. Look at the military, police, the banking industry, medical profession. Even good people stay quiet, perhaps because of a perception that if bad things are exposed it will hurt everyone. Things that are said privately are denied publicly. Been there, done that. Organizations don’t clean house without a little prodding from the outside.

Exactly! And if industry peeps don’t stop defending the abusers and fix these problems, horse racing will go the way of greyhound racing in this country. Like it or not, there are many other legal ways today for people wanting to gamble their money away.

Given the abuses I’ve seen in the show horse world, I’d say that even when good people say something things tend to stay the same. Only when a governing body decides to get serious is there any hope of change.

When there’s a lot of money on the line, there are always people who will cheat, abuse, whatever, to get at that pot of gold.

Yes, Gary started out riding QH’s at bush tracks when he was 14…then moved to TB’s when he was 16. Did he ride with a machine before he moved on to the TB’s? Who the heck knows.

My guess is that is what he and Lukas were talking about then. Not that it makes it right but not relevant to his career in TBs.

Might be a good guess Laurie, but that’s it. GS definitely will have some explaining to do I’m sure.

From the reference to Ruidoso, I think that’s a pretty good guess, and I wouldn’t judge someone by what they did in their teens. I think it was sleazy to include that in the 9 minute video, but we know PETA is sleazy, and it doesn’t change the rest of the video.

Where did you hear that GS admitted that this was done in his teens? Wayne was the only one saying anything about where he was…

Gary said he shocked himself after the wire.

Right, but nothing about when or where…besides the obvious “after the wire”. That is where they dispose/hide the machine.

Oh, I thought you meant you didn’t hear it.

Basically you have on tape, one assistant that admits he will cheat, one very well known trainer admitting he knows about his illegal aliens, and one hall of fame jock admitting he cheated.

Laurie, just wondering why posters are assuming it was done in his teens, that was never stated. yet.

My experience with the machine is you use it in the morning while making a sound with your mouth at the same time ala Pavlov’s dog. I am sure some people still try to use it in the races but that is so risky. I personally pondered if they were discussing “back in the day with QH’s” for that reason.

It has been used in the afternoons more than you think Laurie.

If they’ve got 7 hours of tape and created a 9 minute video from it, GOK where the various comments came in. I haven’t watched it, but I have worked in a TV station and I have been a videographer who has edited tape.

The station where I worked wanted to do some spots for a John Wayne Week and knew I had horses. They came down and shot for four hours - for 60 sec/30 sec/10 sec spots. You bet your bottom (dollar or otherwise) there was heavy editing.

And have you ever LISTENED to spots? On some, the audio is so edited you KNOW (if you pay attention) that the speaker did not say all that in one breath.

PETA? I wouldn’t trust them if they told me it was raining - unless I could go outside and get wet for myself.

I always heard the guys saying you schooled a horse in the morning with the machine, then in the afternoon, unbuckled your reins, and used the metal piece that goes through the hole to simulate getting plugged in.

That can work, until it doesn’t. Still plenty of riders out there that will ride with a machine in the afternoon.

I did look up Nehro’s record just out of curiosity. The horse only ran 12 times from age 2-5, with a couple of very long layoffs (8+ months) in there. Of course the uninitiated will think he was racing every week on sore feet.

I have to think, though, that he probably shouldn’t have been racing, as he had somewhat fragile ankles in addition to the crappy feet.

Wonder why they didn’t retired him to stud after the Belmont? He wasn’t a gelding was he?
