Omega Horseshine--how do you feed?

I just bought a bag for my early-senior for overall immune and hoof support, since flax is supposed to be an excellent anti-inflammatory. The rest of our very small barn decided to go in it as well since it seems like an all-around great supplement to feed.

However, BO just noticed after 2-3 days of feeding that just half a cup is already a really large amount of powder for the relatively small amount of grain 3 of the horses get–they’re all on just 3/4 lb of balancer, as they’re easy keepers and out on good pasture for at least 10 hours a day. She’s actually worried it’ll be a choke hazard, and I noticed my guy left a good bit of it in his bucket last night, though he’s not a picky eater (meaning, I don’t think the taste bothers him but rather the texture as it ends up being a mouthful of powder).

So, any suggestions feeding it? Should we just cut back the dose? I can’t imagine feeding the full 1-cup these guys should be getting (smallest horse is just about 1,000 lbs…everyone else is larger).

Thanks for the help!

Could add water to the feed just before dumping, that way powder sticks to the feed.

I add water and make a mash. Any powder just mixes in and nothing is left behind.

Yes, add water. I feed a soupy solution so that any/all supplements get scarfed right up. No powder, no dust, no picking out the goodies or not so goodies.

I don’t know what the consistency of the Omega is, but I use Vit E and Biotin from HorseTech which are in a ground flax base so it is not powdery. He gets it with a scoop of Blue Seal Sentinel LS which is high in fat for weight maintenance. The flax settles to the bottom as soon as he starts to eat and he literally licks the bucket clean. Doesn’t waste a molecule.

If you have Legends feeds available (Southern States), you might want to try Legends Omega Plus instead. It comes in easy to feed little nuggets. They’ve got a coupon for it out there right now:

I’ve been feeding this to my horse that does a lot of work, and will probably give it to the old mare once it gets colder. She likes it, and it has a sort of fruity smell.

Some horse’s just don’t like powdered supplements no matter how they are served. My one horse won’t touch powdered anything even in soaked feed. The feed pan goes flying along with all the feed.

I simply feed ground flax as it’s so cheap. I was given a bag of Omega Horseshine by a rep who SWORE I would see a difference. Nope. Used it all and back to flax I went.

Flax is not a choke hazard. I feed pellets and not much, and they lick it right up. Once gets thyro-l as well and has no problem cleaning her tub.

Buy flax in the bulk bins at many stores. I pay .49 a pound. Mixes easily with water.

Omega Horseshine is a great product but waaaay too much powder to feed IMO. I’d try one of the other products on the market that don’t require as much per dose. SP has their own flax now and it’s cheap. I give my older guy the omega version with vit E. Lots of other options out there.
