Op ED on Road to the Top Program

I believe she was showing at Traverse City some over the summer. I would imagine she’ll be showing in Wellington over the winter.

There are quite a few jumping tonight that will be equitating on Sunday!

At least they will get an extra hour of sleep on Saturday night when the clocks fall back.

Taylor Cawley just had a lovely round.

Omg that buck on JJ torano’s horse…if this program is going in a few years Katie and Laura will be fighting over JJ for sure!

He can ride the buck and still get to his fences in good order. It’s very impressive.

They have a pretty active YouTube channel, both short clip videos and longer lessons.

This is exactly the problem. These don’t sound like riders w/out connections nor money.

This isn’t a problem at all. This program was not created as a charity meant to help financially strapped riders; it’s a program to help provide a pipeline to the future of the US equestrian team. In other words, the ultimate beficiary of this program is meant to be the US team, and not the individual riders who are chosen. So the individual riders are going to be chosen by how likely they are to make it to the very top levels of international competition, and not by how financially strapped they are. It makes sense that they’re going to choose riders who are already showing that they have the drive, the talent, and a supportive team behind them, but they just need that extra boost to get them to the very top.

Right - totally agree here. This isn’t an equitation grant, or a program to fully support a grassroots kid with promise through the big eq then the 1.40 jumpers. This is to support those who already are showing promise at that level, and need the financial and coaching push to make it to Olympic potentials. Think the kids that maybe DONT have a realistic shot of having a 7 figure team horse in their barn, but could ride well enough to be on the Team IF they had the backing and horseflesh that maybe is a bit beyond their (likely already generous) financial means. We are talking about the difference between multi millionaires and billionaires, here - which is a sad but true reality of the .01% of the 1% that have access to high level showing in the US.

I am looking forward to seeing who comes out of the program. We need a strong pipeline to the US Team with some of our best and brightest on the latter parts of their careers.
