Is the OP confusing hocks for pasterns, and therefor describing DSLD?

I will second the regular gum rubber bell boots as working fine with no rubs on my horse, for many years.
Adding fleece only adds to the risk of rubbing because the dirt sticks to the fleece.
When I retired my old horse I talked with my farrier and we pulled his back shoes. He very quickly, even though he had horrible feet, adjusted to being bare behind. Not in work and his only need was getting to and from the water trough no hind shoes seemed to work great.
Maybe talk to your farrier and vet about seeing if your old guy can do that. It might also help with the need for rubbing boots.
