Outfitting a Dressage Pony

Congratulations!! Ponies are absolutely the best

my girl is a 13.2 hand mix that wears a 66” sheet which is available in most blankets, a cob sized bridle, a 4.5” bit, a 24” Dressage girth, and a Prestige lucky dressage saddle. I buy most of my cheap schooling pads from Horze since many of their cheaper pads come in pony size. My nicer pads come from the Dressage Pony Store, the Collected Pony, or PS of Sweden. My local tack shop can also order from several European brands who mainly do seem to be better about having alternative sizes.

A few more details, I use the Stretchtech TSF girth, which she loves, and did get Dressage boots from People on Horses but she hates boots in general so now I use polos over Eskadron bandages that I ordered from the Dressage Pony Store and Riding Warehouse.

I wish you luck and you should definitely share updates and more photos!

I’m so glad you posted! The Prestige Lucky is actually at the top of my list. Did you get a stock one or custom? The good, bad, and ugly? I’ve been emailing around trying to get clarification. Places like VTO appear to offer stock saddles with one flap length and various tree sizes. However, Prestige Italia and Allsaddles.com indicate that the saddle can be made in 5 different flap lengths and built for the specific horse.

This mare is a bit base narrow so I’m hunting for sport boots. She’s a chestnut so part of me wants to see if I can find cute pony sized brown boots and then a corresponding green, chocolate, or tan dressage pad.

I’ll have to look at the one I bought on sale last year for mine (Junior, the section D). It fits him really well - no wear or rub marks and so far it’s surviving the peanut gallery even in turnout. My section C stinker was a little harder to fit but I found that SS carried a 66 inch that worked pretty well on him, at least it didn’t cause wear marks like the other pony blankets did.

I got a stock one from VTO saddlery. I’ve sent it back a few times for them to widen, or narrow, the tree which has been smooth and painless and worked really well as she’s developed additional muscles and/or lost some pony pudge. I find it incredibly comfortable and it has a deep enough seat to feel secure, even during pony shenanigans, but not so deep that you feel locked in. Even though it’s a kid sized saddle I’m 5’4"ish (although with very short legs) and wear size 2-4 pants and I’m comfortable in it. The leather quality is awesome for the price of the saddle and it felt nicely broken in from day one.
