owners of upper level horses

i was wondering who are the owners of some of the top level horses? it seems like the names of people involved in Syndicates are kept kinda hush hush - or is that my imagination? is it up to the rider to put out the names of syndicate members?

if i had the $$$ to be part of a syndicate i would def want to claim my fame!

Some owners don’t wish to be recognized, and others do. It just depends. I know Sinead is re-vamping her website and owners were asked if they want to be listed or not. It is a personal preference of the individual owners.

Many owners are regularly at shows and are known; others, either part of syndicates or sole owners, may not come to the shows or go infrequently. It’s all dependent on each rider and owner’s personal preferences, but I don’t think there’s any big secret. EN had photos of several members of Boyd and Phillip’s syndicates who flew over to Luhmuhlen to watch.

If OK, with the owners, they are often listed on websites. For example, Trading Aces: http://www.boydandsilvamartin.com/Pages/boyd/TradingAces.html
Shamwari doesn’t have a page yet, but that is usually the rider being too busy to communicate with the person who manages their websites or the webmaster not updating.

Here is how Phillip does it: http://phillipdutton.com/owners/

I would just go to the rider websites and see if the information is there. It often is.

Its your imagination :)…It is really up to the Syndicate Members more than anything. There are some people I know who are part of several syndicates.

I suspect most are like me…I don’t really care if I’m known or unknown…but if I’m not competing myself, I just want my arm band to get parking and into the owners tent  Beyond that…I don’t really need any public acknowledgement.

I like how Phillip has done it…that is very well done.

The majority of owners fall under these categories:

  1. relatives of rider, especially parents
  2. friends of rider

Very true. I’d say students of rider as well as friends.

Eric Lamaze is always very gracious about recognizing and thanking his owners and taking very little for himself.

Same here. For us, it’s a pay it forward situation. We enjoy tremendously helping out the couple we do, wish we could do more, and somewhere along the line someone else will extend a hand to someone very important to me.

I’m on the same page as BFNE and pegasusmom for the most part. The one reason that I think there may be value in recognizing someone like me as an “owner” is that I don’t have a ton of money and it may help folks realize that you can get involved without being wealthy.

Same here scubed! No money tree in our backyard!

Oh here as well (although it is all relative–I make more money than a lot of people but I am not above eating PBJ for dinner some months). I’ve tried really hard to grow that money tree…but no luck yet. Can’t even get the cherry trees to give me cherries!!!

I think there are a lot of members of syndicates who are not extremely wealthy…and then there are some who are.

This point bears repeating. I think a lot of young people think that if they become a really, really good rider many complete strangers will want to buy them horses and pay all of their competition expenses. This situation happens occasionally I suppose, but rather rarely. Instead wealthy parents or other relatives keep paying most of the bills, hiding behind barn or syndicate names to pretend they aren’t. Or very close friends chip in. My impression is that most supportive owners pay because of their personal commitment to the rider, not their commitment to winning competitions.

I don’t know if eventing has gotten to this point yet, but in racing sometimes there are too many people in the syndicate to list.

In most Thoroughbred racing jurisdictions the owners line is limited to around 3 names due to space constraints. At least that what I was always told. It will list the allowed number of names given by the syndicate manager with an “et el” after.

With my racing partnerships the partnership agreement states how the owners line will be dealt with. It is based on the percentage owned. The people with the greatest percentage are first in order. How ever our stable name is always listed first regardless of our percentage by and large. But we usually own the biggest percentage anyway. If there are a number of small “fractional interest” owned then we choice a partnership stable name to go after ours.

My wife just got back from Luhmuhlen and her parents are in the syndicate that owns the horse that finished third. Without going into details it is a multi person syndicate all owning equal shares. I would suspect that as with a racing program there might be space constraints and it would not be possible to list say 10 different names.

My in-laws are 50% owners of another nice horse and their name is listed with their partner. As it should be IMO.

Regardless of the discipline owners IMO are the MOST important part of the equation. And should be given the most “press” and attention. Regardless of discipline most horses end up being “also ran” types. So making the experience a prideful and fun one is imperative.

interesting!

all interesting comments - good luck to all the owners who responded!

Just an aside (after looking at Philip’s owners page) I LOVE what Graham and Anita Motion are doing. They really represent the best of the racing industry
