Shame on so-called animal lovers to interfere with this. This animal went from a safe home to a warehouse for animals, which is awful. From what I’ve seen of best friends they have open kennels, and maybe some indoor kennels, neither one of which substitutes for a home. This animal is being abused by people who are interfering, not helping.
This is one of the reasons my last dog, was my last. It states in my will that my animals ashes are to be scattered with mine. It also said that if the one person I trust with them couldn’t adopt them, or the change would be too traumatic for them at their age, that they be put down. Putting an animal in a cage at the pound is the total opposite of a peaceful, humane death. I don’t trust very many people to keep my animals happy, and healthy the way I did, because it certainly wasn’t cheap, or easy. Better a humane end than ending up caged outside, or traumatized by a rehoming to a place that won’t work for the animals or humans involved.
I’m on the fence about putting down a normal animal as a preventative measure - there is such a thing as being a little bit overly controlling - but if the dog’s aggressive, I think the owner was being very, very responsible. Most dogs are so safe that it’s hard to tell people “Sheba will bite” and have them believe it. A lot of bad dog bites come after a change of ownership; original owner knew the dog’s triggers, even subconsciously, and the new owner has no clue that in Sheba’s world, you’re not allowed to crinkle saran wrap.
You know what annoys me? Best Friends receives hundreds of requests to help with pets every single day. So much so that on their own website they say they do not return calls or emails about pets people want to send to them. But they’re jumping right on on this story, because they stand to make tens of thousands of dollars.

this!
It is refreshing to hear my sentiments reflected here. I wish all the people who want to adopt THIS dog would go down to their animal shelter and ask to adopt a dog off the euthanasia list. I might not agree with her choices but then I’m not in her position. If you have asked friends and families and they aren’t interested and you aren’t able to place the dog yourself I can understand wanting the dog humanely put to sleep. I respect and defend her right to make this choice for the good of her dog in her belief. I don’t want someone coming in and having a say about how I care for my pets as long as I am humane in my care for them.

Wow - that is a crazy twist. Thanks for the update!
I just saw this thread - sorry to hear she had to be put down. They are sending her ashes back to be places with her deceased owner.
Have any of you actually BEEN to Best Friends ? It’s actually a pretty nice set up. They have a vet clinic on sight, very experienced trainers on staff, and lots of paid staff and volunteers to help with the animals. It’s the same people who deal with the same animals most of the time and they get to know them quite well. They live in large runs typically with a few dogs that they get along with well, but they can come and go as they please to heated / air conditioned buildings. Most of the dogs go for walks every day weather permitting.
Anyway - not the same as a home with a person, but not a bad life for a dog, either. And they are experienced dealing with dogs with behavioral issues.
I was very impressed with how well the staff knew the dogs, and how happy the dogs are.
I fully expect my wishes to be carried out if they re in my legal will. Maybe the owner knew the dog was not healthy as said in the article.
Horses, maybe, can enjoy a herd option, a dog used to lying in front of a fire with his own owner and comforts, not so much. Volunteers never quite replace your own person.
Time to check and make sure our ducks are in a row.
I’m not sure why this became a public issue?
Did the owner, knowing the situation not have even ONE trusted friend to carry out her wishes?
Perhaps establishing a relationship with a vet who knew the dog and knew her wishes would have meant a very quick resolution.
I have VERY specific instructions as to what happens with EVERY pet should hubby and I both perish. And I have a trusted friend who will carry out our wishes. And yes, that does include euthing one dog and one horse at this time. We keep our Will updated

All of these rescue groups who want to put dogs in a sanctuary for the rest of their lives are not thinking about the dog.[/QUOTE]
This bears repeating.
