Palatable copper/zinc supp?

I considered it but I wanted to use up the two containers I had just bought (which look like they will last a loooong time).

Ahhh, makes sense. I still have some of the powdered stuff, they were out of the pelleted stuff about a year ago so I opted to get that to tide me over – obviously not my picky horse’s first choice

Well, Dang it! The fennel stopped working and he started to leave more and more feed behind trying to avoid the nasty powdered minerals.

So I went ahead ordered the pelleted versions of the poly copper and zinc and have been checking carefully and he is eating all of it no probs. He’s gone on two weeks of cleaning up the pellets so I’m hoping he will continue.

Now I have the pellets I see why they work better. They do smell kind of weird, but nothing like the foul powders, which I have thrown out.

[QUOTE=sdlbredfan;n9825746you could try California Trace or Trace Plus pellets. Neither of them has any added iron. I’ve fed both supplements in the past, and no horse ever disliked or refused to eat it.[/QUOTE]

My horses loved Cal Trace from day one – even my most picky eater.

Good for you, BatataHead! You’re exactly right about the need to supplement copper and zinc. If you are in a high iron area or your horse is copper deficient (ie, reddish tail ends or mane when it should be all black), the recommended amounts are 300 mg copper and 750 mg zinc…by Dr Kellon. My horses would not eat the Uckele either and I even went thru having a custom product made with Horse Tech. They would not eat that either! Even with all of the flavors we tried. The ONLY copper zinc supp that they will eat no problem is Dynamite’s SOD. There is no iron in it. So while it’s expensive, I only feed it every few months. My horses would not touch the Cal Trace either…powder or pellets. The pelleted Uckele coating was not great from what I read so I never tried that one. All black skinned horses (my greys) require MORE copper also… So I feed a little bucket of the SOD every 3 months to each horse. I have before and after pictures that you would not believe were showing the same horse. BUT… I was also on a good daily chelated Dynamite product at the same time. The SOD is what was so effective though. But if you’re feeding any inorganic stuff, you’re not going to get as good a result. I only feed chelated. https://dynamitespecialty.myvoffice.com/ShoppingCart/index.cfm?FuseAction=CategoryShop&CategoryID=99&ParentCategoryID=4

Horsetech has a custom blend that is intended to balance out high iron. Mine will eat it with fenugreek flavouring (horsetech allows you to pick the flavour). I do alway taper when starting new supplements so they don’t get disgusted with it (start with 1/3 dose for a week, increase by a third each week).

I second California Trace or TracePlus – all my horses LOVE it. I use the powder, not the pellets.
