Palmar and plantar angles - anybody up for a foot discussion? X-rays added

Tough to say just looking at the x-rays. There’s dishing which needs to be addressed but there’s not a whole lot of sole depth so you’d have to be careful…

this is why vets REALLY need to mark the coronet band when taking xrays to see what’s going on in there.

The top of P3 should be pretty well in line with the coronet band, and his look more or less there from what I assume is the coronet based on how the lines go.

Sinking is when that top of P3 starts to fall below the coronet

The ground surface of P3 need to be higher in the heel than in the toe, with at least a 3* angle, and some feel like 4-6 is more appropriate, but you get the idea. The point is - the tip should be lower than the heel.

That you DON’T want to see, which we see here, is the distance from the face of P3, to the face of the hoof wall, increasing on the way down. That’s the flaring that’s been mentioned.

Yes, you can fix this with trimming, but the mechanics of it depend on what’s going on with the entire foot

Hi OP - sorry to bump an old thread but wondering if you were able to relieve this guy’s soreness, through farrier work or otherwise? Feel free to PM if you prefer

Unfortunately this horse was finally diagnosed with bilateral hind suspensory lesions and we are still not 100% after following the full rehab protocol.

Oh man, that’s a bummer. Sorry to hear that - obviously wasn’t the update I was hoping for! Best of luck with the continued rehab.
