I heard it was $50k to each of the owners and $50k to Sherman.
I don’t like to root against horses, but the owners have really turned me off this horse, to where I’m less likely to root for him.

The race set up perfectly for Bayern yesterday, there was no way he was going to be beaten under those circumstances.
Still don’t see him winning at 10f, but at 8f or 9f I think it will take a rabbit and a self-destructive speed duel to beat him.

BC Classic looks wide open. Wouldn’t be surprised to see some heretofore unheralded horse sneaking it. Is there another Arcangues hiding in the long grass?

I always find this silly. (Especially anyone mad at Coburn for calling out CDI for treatment of owners and guests that would get you fired at a casino. Or who miss that racing insiders thought he was a poor sport about the TC but a good chunk of the TC-only public viewers were nodding along with him, and they’re the audience that has to be sold on racing, not crabby old horseplayers.) I thought Funny Cide’s owners were obnoxious and Smarty Jones had a stupid name, but while I wasn’t joining their fan club it would have been nice if one of them won.

And yesterday was classic…they got so busy worrying about bottling Chrome up so he’d get annoyed use himself up (not the first horse who’ll waste energy fighting if he’s boxed in so he can’t go when he gets the chance) they forgot that if Bayern’s pressed, he folds at distance, but if you leave him alone on the lead to pace himself, you’re hosed when you try to run him down. Parx was heavy favoring speed-on hearing that early in the day I promptly chose to use Bayern instead of Tonalist with Chrome and my long shots in the P4. Everyone in the race let Bayern waltz away with it.

Ditto

Funny you should bring up “rabbits”. We were talking about that the other day and how you don’t see the “use” of them much anymore. It seems like it was quite a popular “angle” for a number of years. There have been some deep pocketed owners in years past that would buy a “rabbit” so as to give their horse a better chance of winning.

Sidebar;
I went to the Breeders’ Cup the year Arcangues won. I was at the widows after the race, no I didn’t have him, and this guy starts flipping out, yelling and screaming at the clerks. A bunch of security surrounded and took him away. Turns out he didn’t check his tickets before walking away from the window. He thought he had a bunch of money on Arcangues and was shocked when he handed the tickets to cash and they got spit out as losers. He was trying to grab the guy through window yelling at him for giving him the wrong horse.

Arcangues has the distinction of being the highest long-shot to win a Breeders’ Cup race. He was 99-1, as high as odds board is built to show. In reality he was 133-1 and paid $269.20 for a $2 win ticket.

I always check my tickets. Wish I did the same thing before driving away from the drive through food window.

No one likes un-sportsmen, sore losers. Not just “racing insiders”. The guy was spewing complete nonsense and showed how little he knew and or respected about the sport.
He and his partner continued to put their foot in mouth for months after. They are hardly of the “working class” blue collar that they make themselves out to be.
The only class in the bunch is Mr. Sherman and the horse.
The Funny Cide crowd may not have been everybody’s cup of tea but they weren’t complete butt heads like this crew.

Now that was funny. I can totally relate.

The thing I find annoying about the CC story is the fact that people have hyped him way too much. He is a good horse, but has not shown himself to be a great horse as of yet. To compare him to Secretariat and Man o’ War (as some have done) is just silly. And, great horses overcome all obstacles - post positions, injuries, etc. - to get the job done. I wish CC the best, but am still unconvinced that he is the great horse that many have crowned him to be. Just my opinion.

I don’t think anyone is comparing him to either of the Big Reds at this point.
Earlier on in the year he appeared to have tons of potential, like he could evolve into a monster, and people were legitimately excited (I’ll admit I was one after seeing him romp home in the Santa Anita Derby).

But the majority of young would-be-greats end up falling short. That’s just part of racing. Not every horse can be a Sec, Frankel, Slew, Mill Reef, Fager etc, but I won’t let that stop me from getting excited the next time a young horse that shows the potential to possibly be a great comes along. That’s part of why I love the game.

Every decade or two, if we are lucky, we get to see one evolve before our eyes. It’s a very special treat, and anyone that has witnessed it will always live in hope when they see a young horse with flashes of brilliance. Chrome had those flashes.

I’m actually excited that as of right now the plan is to race him as a four year old. We see so few horses that run well in the triple crown races continue after their three year old season. Some due to injury and some just because they can start getting $$$ stud fees.

Chrome is one of those horses that is good now, but has the potential to be great as a four or five year old.

Personally, I don’t find his owners all that distracting. After all, it isn’t his fault his owners are idiots.

I still see posters on other boards comparing him to Man o’ War and Secretariat (and, as of this weekend, Affirmed). But, hey, I guess if that makes them happy, so be it.

I am actually excited for this weekend to see what Tonalist, Wicked Strong, VE Day, etc. will do…and, of course, Shared Belief.

One of my peeves has been that the media was so completely focused on Chrome that we saw very little coverage of these other animals.

And that’s different from what?
It’s like that every year. The media jumps on the bandwagon of 1 or 2 horses & tends to only cover them.
That’s why the internet is so great! You can follow whatever horse you’d like to your hearts content. Heck most barns, trainers, & even individual horses have their own FB page to get info from.
