We provide up to 20 bales of hay per month (small squares), and 5# of a complete feed or a ration balancer and alfalfa pellets. Anything over that is billed at cost to owner.
I’ve always paid extra for more hay for all of mine.
As for grain, because of the poor (aka cheap) quality of grain provided at most boarding barns around here I’ve always bought my own grain to supplement that provided by the barns.
I want my horses to have unlimited timothy hay and not coastal bermuda, limited flakes, so I pay for it. Then the other horses get my horses leftovers free each day when my 2 come in for the night.
You are correct. This is very much not a California thing.
I’m happy to pay extra and that way I can ensure that they are not short changing her and having her lose weight. A pony owner would appreciate that since my mare is 17.00 hh. It is only fair and I am one who believes in ‘user pay’ as a principle.
