Peacocks

If I were in your subdivision and you brought in peacocks, I would be livid. It is absolutely not the same as dogs barking.[/QUOTE]

My neighbor’s dogs are annoying. The peacocks are absolutely grating. I can easily hear them from several streets over.

We have several peafowl and the noise doesn’t bother me at all, it barely even registers anymore unless they’re causing a ruckus for some reason. Ours have a room in the barn with a “dog door” to an outside netted pen with a shed. They do like to hang out on top of the shed and have a high roost in the room they like to sit on. We have had a great horned owl get into the pen with them and the poor thing couldn’t wait to get out of there - the peahens had it cornered while the peacocks hid. They didn’t attack if the owl sat still but as soon as it tried to fly off to find an escape they flew at it. It was interesting to watch how they reacted.

While I don’t mind them, I don’t think they’re particularly useful for anything (they’re my mothers so I don’t have anything to do with them) and I don’t know that I would bring them into a subdivision with neighbors either.

We are all on heavily wooded lots, of 1 acre or more. In my particular cul de sac, there are extensive woods behind and beside my home, as well as three of the neighboring houses. I wouldn’t want to keep the peacock on my property - would actually prefer it assimilate into the turkey flock and live mostly with them in the woods.

But you folks have convinced me to not get one. Darn it. I thought it would be fun to see one of those gorgeous birds strutting around with the turkeys.:frowning:

My neighbor had one- his farm backed up to a nice subdivision, and after the girls died, and the peacock was alone, I think he got even louder. In addition, he would occasionally escape, and wind up in one of the yards of the neighbors, which they did not approve of.

And loud? Right up there with a Vietnamese Potbellied Pig. Those damn things bray like a very, very large mule.

They can also turn quite aggressive.

I remember that one of our group of friends in high school had peacocks at their farm. It never failed that at least one person was attacked every time we went over there.

It wasn’t like we were even messing around the thing either. We would go in the house and come out and it would be there laying in wait, or it would trek out to wherever we were on the farm and ambush someone. It’s favorite thing was to jump down off of the roof and scratch the bejeesus out of peoples’ heads.

Good god, why would you want to do this to yourself?
There was a flock of the things at my old barn. Pretty to look at, EXTREMELY noisy - even sometimes at night - and dumb as a bag of inbred hammers.
In a no-win situation, I would choose Guinea Hens over Peacocks.

Wait, so you wanted to get a pet peacock for the flock of wild turkeys that lives in the woods by your house? Is this something that people do? I know nothing about birds so maybe it is but it seems really strange to me.

Nope, I wanted to get the peacock for ME.

But I was hoping it would “live” with the turkeys, like the one at the barn used to do.

Not to worry - I don’t want to attract coyotes into the neighborhood, so it’s a no-go.

Oh yeah, they’re so dumb, they will invite coyotes to dinner.
“HEY! HEY! Coyote! Coyote! HEY! WAH! WAH!”
Like ringing a flamboyant dinner bell.

Yes, they roost…high up in the oak tree right outside my bedroom window…where they SCREAM ALL NIGHT LONG FROM APRIL TO OCTOBER!!

Maybe they taste like chicken…

Actually from what I have researched they arent even worth lighting a fire for…meat is dry and tasteless.

Dear God NO! As a third shifter… loud birds in the daytime when Im trying to sleep… If they are close to your house you MAY regret this decision!
