Peanut hay?

I was at Home Depot today down in Florida and they had perennial peanut plants labeled as “ornamental peanut”! I grabbed a couple and will see if I can get it to grow at home.

The tag says it’s hardy to 30 degrees and we get down in the high teens, but I bet I can either cover a section of it or dig some up and bring it inside in pots over the winter to keep it going.

I’m not trying to grow enough to bale, just enough to feed the rabbits and maybe cut a tub full now and again for the pony. Maybe if he’s polite and doesn’t trample it I could hand graze him around the edges.

I do plan to look for a grower this summer and hopefully go pick up a trailer load out of the field.

We feed our horses and donkeys a variety of legume and grass hay. We get coastal and perennial peanut bales, alfalfa bales and peanut Vine hay rolls.

First, I personally believe animals know what they can & cannot eat. With this in mind are horses get free feed of the peanut vine hay in the hay house in the pasture as well as a flake in the morning of perennial peanut & a flake of coastal hay. In the evening they get a flake of alfalfa and supplemental grains.

Our horses also also have good pasture to munch on all day. We have had absolutely no issue with our horse is eating the peanut vine hey. They actually absolutely love it. They will not eat the bigger more viney parts and they just push it to the side and eat what they want. This is not professional by no means and it’s just what we feed ours.

Intersting but this thread is about 7 years old :stuck_out_tongue:
