Pentosan for the mature dressage horse

RaceHorseMeds carries it

Not anymore.

Just to follow up and strongly agree with earlier post in support of pentosan and 4cyte epitalis. Noticeable difference to my schoolmaster (especially with the epitalis which seemed to make him about 5 or 6 years younger). The forcyte was recommended by my vet and is supported by clinical research (in comparison to any other joint supplements available). I would strongly recommend this combination rather than your current regime with glucosomine etc.

I have since placed my 7yo on 4cyte and it is now being used as a preventative treatment for about another 8 horses at my barn - which began after my coach and others saw the change in my boy and on vet advice for their own horses.

Good luck with your schoolmaster - such a lovely gift and opportunity to learn all he has to offer.

The day after I started my schoolmaster on epiitalis (about a year ago) he was so supple and beautifully soft I honestly thought my GP coach had snuck over the day before and given him a tune up, and forgotten to tell me. I really couldn’t believe it.
My horse didn’t stay that way, loading dose week maybe - but I was gobsmacked - and the same thing was evident in a clydie-x eventing mare who was started on it same day as mine - her rider was like ‘whaaat’? Long known in Chinese medicine, the key ingredient Biota orientalis seed oil extract is now being tested for all kinds of other eventual medical uses. Am not a chemist, or a vet (am an art historian) but it works. Also used by vets for djd in dogs. ddx

I tried posting in Horse Care about this but got no responses… for those who like the 4CYTE Epitalis Forte - how do you give it? In their feed? How palatable is it?

My horse is a SUPER picky eater and I so want to try this but I also don’t want to waste the money. He can be a bit difficult to dose if he knows it is coming so I don’t know that I want the barn to have to dose him daily.

They give you a syringe in the box. There are two ways - squirt into mouth (like a wormer paste) or squirt over the feed. It smells great (like apples!) tastes vile (to this human) as one ingredient is green lip mussel. However after a couple of weeks of method A, my picky gelding was happy to snarf it up in his feed. x

ps: he’s very picky about new kinds of foods. We have an expensive disaster with a topline building ‘muscle bar’ (first horse protein bar - don’t know if its available in US yet). He would even taste it broken up and put in with normal feed. Luckily I only got the trial pack.

Where are you getting your 4cyte Epitalis? I’m in California and I’ve been getting it from Australia.

I get mine through Amazon,LOL… but it is shipped from Australia. https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B076546J4M/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new

What is the dosage/frequency for the 4Cyte, please?

I have used pentosan for two of my arthritic older horses although one was semi retired and the other was in light work

Is this available in the US? Any restrictions from USEF or FEI for competitions? I didn’t see it listed in the drug guide?

My 22-year-old lease gelding gets a 5cc Pentosan injection (intramuscular) every two weeks, and it definitely takes the edge off of the arthritis in his right hind hock. If we were still showing heavily, I’d talk to his owners about doing a bit more, but since we’re just at the “routine maintenance” stage and easing off of the rigors of competition, the Pentosan does just fine.

I am interested in the answer to this as well.

When introducing 4CYTE™ Equine to your horse start on 1/4 scoop mixed with feed, slowly increase over the first 5 days.
If you are using 4CYTE™ preventatively the maintenance dose is 1/2 scoop (10.5g) per day.
For horses following surgery or with symptoms of poor joint function it is recommended in the first 4 weeks to feed 1 scoop (21g) per day. After 4 weeks you can reduce the dose to the maintenance dose of 1/2 scoop daily.

This. I find Previcox has worked better for everything.

ESPECIALLY FEET!

Unicorn has been changed to Epiitalis Gel and a green lip mussel powder. Vet is coming today so I’ll see what she recommends.

Can somebody post a link to their source for Pentosan? Do you get individual vials or larger bottle? Cost?

So, if I’ve got this right pentosan and pentosan gold CAN be given IM, and Pentosan Platinum which contains a tiny bit of HA, is given iv? I have my 15 year old gelding on Adequan monthly (has had loading dose) and the epitalis forte… but want to be familiar with all options for possible future use. Can’t really tell if it is working as weather is not allowing regular work… will have to wait for spring to see if we can do those 1/2 pirouettes at the canter without discomfort!

So… Pentosan shot on Tuesday, massive shy on Wednesday. Coincidence…?

In the words of my farrier this morning, “He’s feeling quite well, isn’t he?”
