Pentosan question

No problem, I have done a lot of reading and comparing of all the different Pentosans.
I’ve never actually used the Platinum, so I don’t know about its effectiveness, but maybe the GL and HA give added benefit and your horse will do quite well on the dose you plan…

I tried Pentoan Gold once and saw no difference between it and the regular, so I just stuck with regular.

Good luck, I hope it helps your horse!

Pentosan is an extremely popular and effective drug used for joint issues in horses all over the world. The issue is that some vets are

  1. leary about compounded medications and believe that there are often issues at compounding facilities and they are putting their clients, and their risk of being sued, in danger.

  2. against using any drug for off label use, even if it has a proven history. If used off label and something does go wrong, then the vet can be held liable.

So some vets are against Pentosan or any compounded medication. However, MANY vets are not. It can be something as simple as finding another vet to supply it.

…Pentosan is legal for use in horses in Australia and some vets will provide it and not the compounded version.

For me Pentosan works wonders and is much less expensive than Adequan.

I don’t dispute that at all! I wish someone would do the legwork (i.e. pay for the appropriate studies) to get this product labelled properly for what so many are using it for. Its popularity is clear!

Vets clearly have varying degrees of flexibility with the ELDU rules, and I would imagine that one unfortunate influence on their position is the likelihood that they’ll just lose business to someone less stringent with these rules. Here’s hoping that there is a sufficient financial case to be made that one of the pharma companies will step up and do this properly.

My original point is that anyone working at a veterinary pharmacy should not be puzzled by the concept of an ELDU protest.

Thank you, everyone! Here’s what I heard from another local vet: Recently (January) there were reports of localized reactions to Pentosan compounded by Wedgewood Pharmacy. Therefore, the local vets are not rxing out to Wedgewood anymore. Honestly, I have no idea why my veterinary practice didn’t just tell me this. Perhaps they had a client horse have one of these reactions, and they consider this private information. At any rate, I’m still mulling over what to do. As an aside, I am fully aware of the off-label usage limitations, and this same practice has been rxing out the Pentosan for many years. Nothing currently exists in veterinary medicine that works in the way that Pentosan does, per se. Some other drugs have a similar effect, but the treatment for osteoarthritis is more a shotgun approach than anything. Thanks again, everyone!

Sorry to jump in her at the end, but has anyone ordered pentosan from racehorse meds? I couldn’t remember the website that was mentioned here and when I googled buying it that’s the website I got. Shipping is only $9.45 and I remembered others saying it was $39.00 so I hopped back here to check.

Prices are the same (except it isn’t on sale at race horse meds) with just the cheaper shipping. I wanted to do a search to see if there was any info that way, but I can’t figure out how to search fourms anymore!

Race Horse Meds and https://horseprerace.com/ have been the ones people have been talking about.

I asked for a quote from my vet for Pentosan Gold, because I was curious and obviously would feel better ordering directly from my vet instead of a website, and they quoted me $89 for a 6ml bottle. :frowning:

$89?! That’s crazy, even with the exchange rate. I was going to ask my vet but I think I’ll just go ahead and order it online. I

I’m in Canada, the 50 ml bottle is still cheaper even after the exchange and shipping.

I’m looking at this product: https://horseprerace.com/pentosan-injection-50ml/ Can anyone say how many doses are in the bottle?

My vet sells Pentosan for $185 in a 250 ml/mg bottle with instructions to give 6 ml every 10-15 days.

Edit:I might be a dummy. Does this “COMPOSITION:
Pentosan for horses is formulated with Sodium polysulfate 250 mg/mL in a 50 mL sterile glass vial.” mean the same thing?

You are to give 6ml ((1.5 g / 500 kg horse – 6ml) ) for 4 loading doses (one dose a week) and then after that it’s once a month.

A 50ml bottle will last you at least, 4 loading doses and 4 months (1 dose a month) so 8 doses in total. If you are doing the recommended amount.

Well the very first time I did Pentosan I did a loading dose, but haven’t since then. Thanks for the amount clarification, I was going nuts.

Has anyone been using any the new batches of Pentosan Gold from HPR? I’ve got a vial of batch# 010417 - both the vial and website now state IV injection route, not IM; same quantity per dose. There’s one other thread with one recent report of a bad reaction - unknown if given IM vs. IV.

WHY would you inject anything that is not FDA approved? OMG! I am pretty positive that the horse prerace pentosan is not pentosan. I saw absolutely no benefit from it vs. did see a benefit from Wedgwood, which is a regulated compounding pharmacy. Additionally, what they are doing is illegal, so if you have a misfortunate result from using their products, you will probably have no recourse.

Okay. We get it. You don’t like horseprerace. You post on every single thread about it.

I’ve been using horseprerace’s Pentosan for over a year now. I have seen FANTASTIC results in a 20 year old creaky horse. We went from needing 20 min of warmup to loosen up to walking out of the stall ready to go. Plenty of other people on these boards have seen great results with the horseprerace stuff as well, and I have seen WAY more issues with the Wedgewood stuff causing reactions.

Some of us have vets who flat out won’t write a script for pentosan, or who mark it up excessively.

I have used the HPR pentosan in the past and thought it made a noticeable difference in the horse I was using it on. I’d also used the Wedgewood pentosan prior to this and had problems with reactions (but no reactions with the HPR product). I haven’t used any in the past year, however, so can’t comment on any problems with recent reactions from either source.

I think they changed their directions after so many people were reporting bad reactions from the IM shots (including me). I declined their suggestion to give it IV after both of my horses had such a dramatic reaction. Um, no thank-you. Yes, I have mentioned this on other threads too (sorry, but it’s true). I also had a problem three years ago with one bottle from Wedgewood, but have not had any issues since. I have a new bottle and have given two shots from it.

For any type of IM injection I always do a very thorough scrubbing of the area first using a spray bottle of alcohol and a towel. Then I let it dry and repeat with alcohol and clean paper towels, wiping it clean each time. I then spray on a light layer of alcohol on and let it air dry, and THEN I give the shot.

I also keep my bottle in the house in it’s plastic bottle (or zip-lock bag). I take the bottle out and blot the top with alcohol and let that dry before drawing up a syringe.

RaceHorseMeds and HorsePreRace are the same company, by the way. They go by another name, too, but I forget what that is.

Is horseprerace.com still carrying Pentosan Platnum? I don’t see any pentosan on their website.

According to my vet, Pentosan is no longer manufactured. I think another company bought them out and then decided that there wasn’t enough profit in it, so they discontinued it.

I found it at Racehorse Meds.com. They just also had a great sale for Black Friday 25% off.
