Pergolide and depressed horse- update post 23

If you’re only using a partial pill, it needs to be tightly wrapped back up

Always, always use gloves when cutting a pill - humans should not come in contact with the drug.

If partial pill dosing is a long-term thing, it may be worth looking at compounding from a reputable pharmacy. You’d need no more than 30 days worth as it does degrade some. But if you’re just partial-dosing on the way to using a full pill, not worth it.

Yeah - my guy’s colic and “too hot to eat” and sometimes even body sore (like when he fell down in the pasture running like a fool) all look similar. so I’m concerned about the veil. We are under a heat advisory this week and I’m out of town this weekend when it’s suppose to break. So we’ll start the med next week and hope for the best.

Update that mare is finally feeling better. I elected to just grit my teeth and stay at full dose rather than dropping down and re-titrating to effective dose. It is not possible to get the APH stuff here.
My vet has been great, says that it is unusual but the “pergolide veil” may last a couple of months. I think it has been about 8 weeks for us.
Today mare was waiting at the gate for breakfast, polished her bowl and looked around for more then begged for treats! She is cheerful and affectionate again, interested in her surroundings and feels great under saddle. I am relieved our persistance has finally produced positive results!

So relieved to hear this update on your girl. When I had to put my old gelding on Prascend, I remember how frustrating it was, trying anything to get him to be interested in food again. I actually backed him down to half a tablet for a month, then 3/4 and finally a whole.

Sending you both hugs for continuing success. :kissing_heart:

Great news! Glad horse is back to normal behavior.
