The study that showed compounded pergolide had a 2 week shelf life was as an aqueous solution. The study didn’t make sense to me, as every compounding pharmacy I bought it from sold it as an oil suspension, which is a whole nother kettle of fish. I used the oil, kept it in the frig and it worked a long time. A friend got a big bottle from a horse that was put down. It worked just fine on her PPID horse when it was 3 months old.
Most compounding pharmacies have changed from water-based to oil-based Pergolide Suspensions. The efficacy of the suspension will reduce over time but it will not be 0% at day 31, so it would still be of some benefit.
My boarder’s horse receives compounded Pergolide in a powdered form. One tiny scoop in a clump of beet pulp and he eats it right up. Apparently it is a lot more inexpensive than Prascend.
PSA When your dog sneaks into the barn and eats the equivalent of 2 months worth of the horse’s dose in one shot… your dog will be fine… fluids and Ace depending on his blood pressure… but no lasting effects.
