Plastic hay ball feeders

I was also wondering how the hay balls were. They didn’t look like they would hold very much and that they’d be a pain in the butt to fill. Y’all have convinced me that my feelings were spot on.

I’ve been trying to slow my hay-hoover down a bit and all the really small hole hay nets I have tried have been turned into large hole nets. The boy gets frustrated with the tiny holes, bites the net, and voila, larger hole, happier horse, back to faster hay consumption. They only nets I’ve been able to keep intact are the Shires nets. I also have a couple of indestructible Tough1 hay bags, but those are more of a pain to fill than the Shires nets.

They are a little bit of a pain to fill, but at most a couple of minutes with the local grass hay I feed. I’d hate to fill it with alfalfa. Ouch. To me, it’s worth the entertainment they provide.

All three of my horses LOVE their hayballs, even the yearling. I have the Burlingham ones. I can only fit one flake of hay (from a two string bale–so about 3-4 pounds of hay). Also my older horses can clean the hay balls out in about an hour. I give it to them when I check them at night before I go to bed).

Another hay ball fan here! Got this for Christmas to keep him busy along with his portagrazer. It holds a smaller flake and he loves banging the thing around.
