Podencos anyone?

Consider: re cost - some rescues charge an awful lot for adoptions (I think). Hopefully your dog will have been honestly evaluated, she will be spayed, come with her crate, leash and collar, delivered and shipped + you are getting a lovely dog, giving her a beautiful life. Justify, justify!

When I got my greyhounds, I wrote to them giving a description of the life they would live and we got two perfectly matched greyhounds.

A fellow photographer is involved with Galgo and Podenco rescue and does photos of their dogs for them. He does more of the Galgo side though. I want one so badly!!!

Congrats on your new addition!

@iberianfan Just wondering if you ever got your Podenco? Hope it all worked out!

Very exciting! WHen I lived in Europe (Netherlands and Belgium) I met several Podencos that had been rescued through Spanish organizations. By all accounts they are very sweet, fun, loving dogs that have an intelligence and goofiness to them. The one trait that I would struggle with is that many have very poor recall off-leash due to high prey-drives.

Ultimately that’s why I didn’t adopt one when it came time to get a dog. Of course as fate would have it my dog has a high prey drive and is unreliable off-leash when in areas with lots of prey (rabbit, squirrels, deer). sigh

I love the wirey coated Podencos - who can resist those big ears too!

EventingMaff, I am hoping that this girl will be trainable and maybe become reliable off leash. In the meantime, she will live on a leash. She has been on the streets for 4 years, so I imagine she is smart, can find food anywhere, escape anything…etc. She loves people and wants to be a lap dog.

You might want to get her tested for brucellosis- I understand some imported dogs have been found to have it.

Happy for you to have a new dog to enjoy!

Congratulations! She’s adorable. I don’t think the fees are that bad. There is a rescue in MN that has adoption fees ranging from $500-$1000, from what I’ve seen. It makes your deal seem cheap!

@iberianfan She’s adorable! She looks happy and well adjusted. I love the doggy smile she gives the camera. Congratulations and Best wishes!

Ooh timely thread! I was considering adopting a dog from Spain as I am in Europe and it is not terribly difficult. I also buy my horses in Spain so I figured why not a dog too, haha.

I was looking through the rescues but my husband isn’t too fond of the Galgo dogs. I love them, but he simply does not like how they look/their physique  But I still think one could grow on him. I’d consider another breed too as I am more about personality than breed for the most part. I was intrigued by the Podencos.

However, as some form of weird compromise, we put a “reservation” down on a Labrador litter for a female in a certain color. If said female of specified color is not born, then I am 100% adopting. I may still in addition to the Labrador if she comes, as it really bothers me buying vs. adopting even though this breeder is very responsible with a great program and reputation. I actually feel really guilty about not immediately adopting an already existing dog.

I am curious to how it goes with your new dog, OP.

Maybe something will catch my eye and heart on the adoption websites…

ETA: I did look at the Galgos Del Sol site and they have some beautiful Galgos on there! and the Podencos…those ears!

She is home!! And what an amazing dog. More than 12 hours in 2 cars, mine in a a crate, and while she protested for a few seconds at being recrated after a walk, she was stellar. I took my current dogs so all would have some time to at least be near.
She is an adorable package, like a sports car. Loves everyone. Wants to play with my senior citizens, but they are not yet convinced. Is lying at my feet as I type. Knows her name, takes a correction. Curious, super friendly. In all regards, just wonderful.
The story of these dogs is brutal and this one, for one, deserves much better. I vote you rescue…

@iberianfan That is so wonderful to hear! I wish you much happiness with your new addition.

@CanteringCarrot Are you on Facebook? There is a FB Group called Galgos Del Sol Sweet Life. It has really cute posts showing updates of Galgos and Podencos in their new life, post-adoption. What you do is show your husband updates daily, until he falls for their charm and sweetness. Then you swoop in and adopt one

Thanks! I’ll check out the group.

He really has this strong bias against “wirey” or slender built dogs. But what can he say if one shows up? I know he’d be unable to turn him/her away!

But I suppose I shouldn’t take the ambush approach

@iberianfan your dog sounds lovely! I hope that she continues to settle in well.

Anyone considering importing a dog to the US or Canada, please get the dog tested for canine brucellosis before shipping.

We are seeing an upsurge in cases due to the importation of rescue dogs from abroad. This is a very difficult disease to manage, there is no real cure, some quarantines of numerous dogs have been necessary. It is a simple blood test, please do prior to shipping or quarantine when you get here and test.

@Houndhill–thanks for the heads up on brucellosis. I had no idea!

Iberianfan, how has your new Podenco settled in?

@LuvRedHeads , she is excellent! I have left her loose in the downstairs the last couple of days with no problem. She is certainly not housebroken, but does wait until I get home and take her out. I have to be quick on the BM side or she does have an accident.
I can’t let her out in the fenced back yard because I am sure she would locate some weakness in the fence and charge after some critter. I just take her on leash. I am working with “leave it” when it comes to squirrels and other fascinating things, but we have a ways to go to overcome her hunting instinct. She may never totally overcome it, but she loves treats and that helps!
She is just adorable. Loves life. Cheerful, outgoing, curious. My very, very timid rescue is just now getting used to Perla. Perla is not stupid - she knows to give the other dog a wide berth. My old Aussie has pretty much accepted her, until she tries to take his bone. But he likes to look for chipmunks and other game, too, so they team up to snort in holes.
She is a little higher energy than what us old codgers are used to, but she is adjusting, as are we. Plus, she’s 8, so it’s not like she’s a puppy.
She is so funny - she does not like night - when it’s dark she goes right to sleep. Does NOT want to go for a walk. But wakes up right before dawn - which is a little early, but we are managing. Chews more than my other two…Got to keep supplied in chewables.
She has a great personality and we are falling in love.

“We” means me and my other two dogs…
