Question for you (or other fox hunters) … I assume a “cur dog” is a dog of any breed that isn’t part of the hunting pack?

And why would anyone do that? I am on the very very edges of fox hunting (have friends who belong to the local) and even I know better. That’s worse than showing up on a four-wheeler instead of a horse.
Firstly, let me just say how many times I hunted in Devon where MANY land owners rode along side with 4 wheelers

Now then, to your original question. Yes, “cur dog” is any dog not in the pack of hounds. And while you would think it’s common sense to leave them at home, I have seen it happen more than once that someone decide to bring their lap dog with them to a meet. They don’t let them out (thank god), but generally they are loud and yappy, and could potentially be a distraction to the hounds. Little FiFi’s barking can excite hounds left at the kennels, and make it difficult to know if it’s working hounds speaking, or hounds still in the kennel.

I don’t know WHY, I think it is the warped belief that the dog is happier locked inside of a small truck than laying at home? In any event, it’s never resulted in anyone being excused for the day, but they are always sharply reprimanded and asked to part furthest away.

As far as p2p meets go, again, it’s just not an event to bring a pet too. Sometimes it’s quite hot, and I feel bad for dogs expected to stay outdoors in blazing heat for hours–LEAVE THEM AT HOME. I feel the same about bringing dogs to horse shows as well. It serves zero purpose and is an annoyance to others.

Ahhhh … thanks for the information. As I said, I’m on the fringe of the fringe. I’ve been invited to hilltop, but haven’t ever done it.

Yup. Horse shows (and barns, for that matter) are NOT dog parks. I’ve resorted to leaving notes on hay bales if I’ve seen Fido marking his territory on them. bleah

I usually bring quiche! That’s always a hit. I Always bring food to a tailgate, always but…if you’re just wandering around the parking spots and see friends; there’s a fine southern hospitality that says it’s ok to partake a bite if invited or there for a bit. Stopping by is perfectly ok! Tailgates are not always by invitation at point to points. There’s an assumption that friends are always welcome.

But now I know who Bigblackdraft is! This is an alter. She’s using this thread to take up some not specific issues (unrelated to my whine); she must have w/me. I know her, I thought we were friends. Using a public forum to bring stuff up like this is cowardly; if there’s something you’d like to say…just call me. Be glad to discuss with you. Otherwise you are a hunt snob and bully who won’t discuss something face to face like a grownup. And I’m surprised you took this public…shame on you. Hunt gossip should be kept inhouse and with only the parties involved. There are 2 sides to every story. But you went public; I just don’t think that’s good.
Bring it on [edit].

Well, then, :: snatches back mimosa and boa :: I am now become the Mimosa and Boa Nazi.

:: gives mp another mimosa and air-kisses ::

don’t know you Wateyglwn, but I do know JSwan well enough to say that she’d not use an alter if she wanted to call you out on something.

So, you brought your cur dog to the meet?

Note to Carrie: I read this forum a lot, but don’t post often.

Me too!
But now I know who Bigblackdraft is!

You’d be wrong. JSwan is perfectly capable of calling someone out without hiding behind an alter. She’s smacked my nose with a rolled up newspaper a couple of times–and I deserved it :uhoh:

So…since Bigblackdraft said her list wasn’t aimed at anyone, but your feathers are ruffled and you’re pointing fingers at JSwan, are you admitting you refused to pay a cap fee when asked

If you know JSwan, you would know I am not her. If she has a problem with someone she is not shy at all about discussing it with them.

You seem very defensive and seem to think a lot of people have issues with you based on my previous post. As I said, they were just my opinions based on observations from my years of hunting and participating as a volunteer and a paid attendee at races and such. If you think you do provide fodder for gossip, perhaps you should rethink some behaviors. JMHO.

So true. One of the things I’ve always admired about JSwan is her level head and level hand in participating in threads.

Watery, if the shoe fits, whose fault is that?

I read BBD’s post as just a general ‘how it’s done’. If you read something personal to you into that, I’m sorry that you are uncomfortable but that’s your own doing  I read it as a primer on how do it well, and that’s just good general information to know. Shrug.

I have never used an alter on this forum.
I do not know who that poster is.

I have nothing to do with whatever trouble you find yourself in. Do not threaten me or make a public accusation of nefarious or unsporting conduct without proof. You are barking up the wrong tree. I spent the entire day in various board meetings, and only got in this evening. Something I can prove, by the way.

I stand by what I wrote earlier in the thread. I don’t think admission prices are that expensive, considering that these are fundraisers and each year, the cost of putting on the races goes up.

I’ll add an additional thought - one of the reasons organizers charge less for a full car is to encourage people to carpool or otherwise pool resources. These races usually take place on private land; often someone’s hayfield. It’s important to mitigate the damage done to a landowner’s land and to also try and reduce the amount of traffic congestion on rural roads. I think that’s very reasonable.

As to the rest - I have nothing to do with it; so do not drag me into whatever drama is going on. There is nothing to “bring on”.

I do think it is rude to complain about prices; when we all know the tremendous amount of work that goes into holding these wonderful races. That is my opinion and again, I stand by it. People are welcome to disagree and that’s ok too.

Oh, my, the plot thickens! Carrie, may I have a mimosa, please?

WG, as we approach adulthood our memories and math may get a little fuzzy, but I do recall hauling you to your first meet the season after Warren Harrover’s passing in April 1984…30th anniversary of which is soon upon us, so ‘over 30 years’ might be a stretch. I do note J Swan posted earlier in the thread and as others have noted, is not one to hide behind an alter (and neither am I, actually). So you might just want to move on to the next covert lest you be rated for babbling. I do well remember the sport of VA hunt country gossip and those who, back in the day, were fond of spreading hilariously false rumors with great gusto. Part of the hunt country charm. Which reminds me someone asked me to ‘translate’ A Portion For Foxes some months back but I can’t find my copy!

Ah, such a wonderful book for a “walk down memory lane”, per se. It is so much fun to read it and know who she was referring to; what a stir it caused when it was published! Smoky E. once had us ROLF for an hour with his comments the last time it was brought up at a get-together.

LOL, some dear friends of ours always have a tailgate on Member’s Hill for the GC, and we are always invited, so we join them. We contribute items to a lot of tailgates at PFH, OCH,the Mburg Spring & Fall races, and GC, as so many friends have long-established spots at all of them. I would like to host a tailgate at MH’s P2P one of these days, but Mr. SSR and I are always working that day (he as a placing judge, and me at the front gate doing will-call).

Though our methods aren’t failsafe by any means, there doesn’t appear to be any link between JSwan’s account and bigblackdraft’s.

Thanks,
Mod 1

I think Beverley needs to “leave it” …for the record…Bev & I are old foes that crosses 2 hunts we were in over the years. OLD news. And you are also guilty of fuzzy memory/selective memory. What does it matter except you are trying to defend your friend… And that I fully realize how destructive hunt country gossip can be…which is why I called BBD out. Anyway… I’m waiting for a phone call. Anyone?
Some things are best left off boards don’t ya think? Private hunt business. And in NoVa…tongue wagging is a major preoccupation so if you try to out/hurt someone (and get outed back) you should try to nip it in the bud. Not sure “friends” would perpetuate gossip or lies. Just sayin’!!
You guys have NO idea what’s going on here, no idea!!
I am not criticizing a hunt specifically for their admission prices. I jdid not mention any names. Get over it being so damned defensive! It’s a fact that prices have gone up and I thought I’d whine about it while I was glum about thigh deep snow and bored. . The other stuff is not germain to the subject; nor even true. oh well.

I know less than nothing about life in Hunt Country. This thread is the closest I’ll ever come to hunting or point to points, but even I can see the flaws in your reasoning, WG.

YOU should have “Left It” by not starting this at all.

Yeah, I understand whining as winter drags on, but hey, it’s winter everywhere in the northern hemisphere. You ain’t the Lone Ranger. If you can’t afford this hobby/sport/pasttime, find another that’s less expensive, or find a better way to fund it.

:: shifty eyes :: Is this the appropriate time to mention that, in order to fund my non-existent hunting career, I have resorted to generic orange juice, bottom-shelf sparkling wine, and dollar store boas that shed ridicuously? And I still don’t have a pot to pis–erm, two coins to rub together!

You guys still want mimosas?
Yes. So “leave it” before you’re left with nothing but a deep hole you can’t get out of.

Shoot yeah, amongst kindred spirits, even Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill would work. Though if you ever have the opportunity, don’t turn down Melvin Poe’s home brew (free but enjoyed over the years by Jackie O among others!).

Alas, I simply cannot be a Mimosa Nazi.

Hunt Princesses and Princes, please, imbibe
