Question for you (or other fox hunters) … I assume a “cur dog” is a dog of any breed that isn’t part of the hunting pack?
And why would anyone do that? I am on the very very edges of fox hunting (have friends who belong to the local) and even I know better. That’s worse than showing up on a four-wheeler instead of a horse.[/QUOTE]
Firstly, let me just say how many times I hunted in Devon where MANY land owners rode along side with 4 wheelers
Now then, to your original question. Yes, “cur dog” is any dog not in the pack of hounds. And while you would think it’s common sense to leave them at home, I have seen it happen more than once that someone decide to bring their lap dog with them to a meet. They don’t let them out (thank god), but generally they are loud and yappy, and could potentially be a distraction to the hounds. Little FiFi’s barking can excite hounds left at the kennels, and make it difficult to know if it’s working hounds speaking, or hounds still in the kennel.
I don’t know WHY, I think it is the warped belief that the dog is happier locked inside of a small truck than laying at home? In any event, it’s never resulted in anyone being excused for the day, but they are always sharply reprimanded and asked to part furthest away.
As far as p2p meets go, again, it’s just not an event to bring a pet too. Sometimes it’s quite hot, and I feel bad for dogs expected to stay outdoors in blazing heat for hours–LEAVE THEM AT HOME. I feel the same about bringing dogs to horse shows as well. It serves zero purpose and is an annoyance to others.
