Just FYI–On my vet’s suggestion, I took my guy to an acupuncturist for another issue (hocks or SI??). The acupuncturist is interested in traditional Chinese medicine, including the use of herbs, but she’s also a down-to-earth scientifically trained vet (interesting combination). Her interest in acupuncture and Chinese medicine arose from her own successful experience with chronic pain from a bad fall off a horse. She diagnosed issues in my horse’s digestive system (in addition to confirming hocks and suggesting digital xrays and injecting, no less) and put my guy on an herbal supplement called, as one might expect, “Stomach Happy”.
Now, I’m a hard-core scientist myself; my PhD is in physical chemistry, where I studied IR spectra of small molecules–I want my models simple and exact, no black-box multi-variable biological systems for me, nosiree Bob. My career has since led me into mathematics where there are even more exact answers (chaos theory makes me crazy). I’m a pretty scientific, black and white person.
BUT. When it comes to my horses, I want results. Having had a positive experience with cranial-sacral therapy–which is even more vodoo in my book than Chinese herbs–followed by a recommendation by my vet, who is, well, a vet, and a very down-to-earth one at that, but who had seen remarkable results in her sister’s jumpers with acupuncture–I was willing to give it a try.
So far, so good. The treatment w/ the Stomach Happy will be a month, almost finished now, and then he may need a course of it perhaps twice a year. But he has so far been completely symptom-free (I admit I haven’t challenged him in the ulcer department), and he eats it readily mixed in his feed (oil helps it stick better than water).
I also had good results with the pop rocks, and it was difficult to stop using them when I started on the herb supplement, because I understand how they work. I’m a believer in the pop rocks. I just mention this as an alternative for anyone who has problems with the pop rocks treatment, if you can find a good vet who also does acupuncture and uses herbs.
