Does anyone use a portable fence charger system when you are trail riding? Pro’s/Con’s? Any particular brand you like or dislike?
I’ve been setting up an electric paddock for my horse when camping since '95. I like the small green charger sold by KV Vet as it only requires 2 D batteries. There is also a yellow jacket fence charger that is quite popular.
Yep, we’ve used one for years. Ours runs off of a little lawnmower battery, works like a charm. I think it’s a Gallagher but I’d have to look at it to be sure.
I like to put it up in a figure 8, horses in one loop and another loop around the tent. We camp in the wilderness/bear country and I like having a line of defense.
ETA Ours probably weighs 5-8 lbs with the battery. We use pack horses to get where we go.
Well, if you are camping out of your trailer, any charger that runs off a deep cycle battery (or any DC power source) is portable! That’s what my home charger is. Of course, no one wants to carry that battery very far if your paddock is not close to the truck/trailer, but if they are close or if you also travel with your own wheelbarrow or muck bucket cart, voila.
