Cropped for privacy, but here is a racehorse PPE that we did last week.
I got a full exam and x-rays of basically everything, including his back, for right around $3000. My horse was young and green and had been out of work for several months when I bought him, so I wanted to be on the safe side. Luckily he passed with flying colors, and the rads have come in handy as a baseline a few times since I bought him.
Iām vetting a horse in Northern California. Itās probably going to cost me $5,500, which is more than Iāve spent before. Sheās the most expensive horse Iāve bought and Iāve mostly done vet checks in Europe that were less expensive.
Iāve had put down two wobblers (one just last year), so the neck xrays are getting looked at by two different radiologists.Last time I had a well-respected vet who is very sensitive about neck xrays say my mare was fine and well she really ended up not being fine at all. This horse is older, so I feel like there is less risk, but it feels like horses just donāt have normal facets anymore at C-5-6. Whether they never did bc we didnāt always xray the necks or itās being bred in them, I donāt think they really know.
My current horse also has degenerative suspensory issues, so we are going to ultrasound those as well.
I think in total Iāll have 88 xrays of this horse. If I end up getting her, I know Iāll be really happy to have those for a baseline reference. Sheās jumped a lot in her life, so I never expected her to vet perfectly (they donāt any more anyways) but I like knowing what joints are less than ideal so I know what to feel for under saddle that could be bothering them later. Anyway, fingers crossed she āpassesā i.e. I can live with all the issues.
2022 at a clinic in Ocala, did a full PPE on a 4 coming 5 yr old for a hunter/jump job. PPE included xrays of front hooves, hocks, stifles, front and hind fetlocks. Back and neck images (plus more I donāt remember) had been done the month before in Europe and sent ahead of time and we didnāt elect to redo them. The total was $2500. Iāve had him 2 years now with no issues. We repeat the front hooves yearly for shoeing purposes.
I bought my 3rd level trakehner 3 yrs ago when he was 10. highly regarded vet did ppe in Wellington. she noted his neck was stiff but didnāt think neck films were necessary. I spent 2k on ppe, took rads everywhere except for back and neck. 2 yrs later he was diagnosed w wobblers. I did the surgery and heās fabulous, glad I did it. the ironic thing is if I had the neck films done, my trainer would have advised against buying him and I would have missed out on the horse of a lifetime.
I do a full PPE - normal exam + neuro eval, ridden observation, lameness exam/flexions, full x-rays, bloodwork + EPM, Lyme, and drug screen, and ultrasounds only if necessary.
Prices have come out between $2500 and $5500 depending on location and vet.
I do a full PPE:
X-rays of all four legs, back and neck, and ECVM films
Full exam
Flexions
Bloodwork
My last two have been in San Diego and Boston and have averaged about $4K
