This is like asking how long a piece of string is. More information is needed. How tall are the parents?
I know this is an old post, but I’m hoping some of you may still be active!
I’ve got a QH filly who just turn two last month. She’s measuring 14.1 hh at the withers and 14.3hh at the hind. Her dam was 14.3hh and her sire was 15.1hh. I’ve got a few people telling me she’s done growing, but 2 seems pretty young to be at a hard stop. I did a string test on her and it showed her topping out around 15hh.
What are your thoughts on this? Think 15hh sounds right, or is it likely she will grow more?
The below pic is her. 😊
The general rule is add 1h to the 24 month height. So, 15.1 ± is what you could expect.
Doesn’t gelding v mare (or stallion) come into play? Geldings keep growing for a longer time, and typically grow taller than they would have if left intact.
Yeah, but we’re not talking about inches. There are plenty of tall stallions and short geldings relative to what their genetic would have suggested.
Anyone want to take a guess on my baby? 16.3hh TB mare(her sire is 17.2hh), here’s the link to her pedigree:
https://www.pedigreequery.com/cressida18
bred to a 15.2hh welsh/Tb/Oldenburg. Sire has produced very large thus far and the mare‘a first foal by a different stallion is 16.2 as a 2 y/o. What are the odds that I’ll get something at least 16.2hh?
Bumping this up cause I’m super curious about everyone’s opinion on my baby’s height!
What does “very large” mean in this context?
What are the sizes of his parents?
I will have to check on the size of his parents, I know his sire was a large small pony and I believe that his dam was at least 16.2.
His remaining yearling at the farm is 14.3hh out of a 14.2hh mare. The breeder was hoping the baby would be a top of the line large and it’s already over.
Bump, anyone?
This is very hard to know—total guess. â˜ºï¸ I’d guess 16.1-2 which is such a lovely size!
