Preferred form of Bute?

I like the flavored powder. I’ve never had a horse not gobble it up in a small amount of equine senior or beet pulp. Out here, it’s molasses flavored, but in Calif. my vet had some compounded with peppermint flavor. My old horse loved that!

Peppermint bute powder is a miracle. I did the pill crushing for years and this is so much easier with no waste.

Tablets, easier to feed for my bunch. They won’t touch even the flavored powders.
If I need to make a powder or paste I can throw them in a coffe grinder to make a powder, add powder and water in a syringe for a paste.

I don’t even get that fancy! I have some 60-90cc scoops from supplements, put a broken pill in it, use the end of a syringe container to mash it (it takes < 10 seconds) and then use a funnel to dump it into the syringe, then draw up water and shake

Bute dissolves quite readily in a little water… just sayin’…

I dissolve my pills in water, add a little flavor of choice, suck it up and down the hatch it goes.

With my current herd I like bute tablets. They all eat them willingly and two of them are offended by powdered intruders in their feed if I try to add something.
(Horses are weird.)

I am surprised regularly at the number of horses who easily eat bute tabs.

It does! It just takes a little longer than I want to wait LOL

Me too!

I’m well aware. I happen to have a small coffee grinder in my med cabinet dedicated to grinding pills, especially SMZs which take longer to dissolve. It’s just as fast for me to grind Bute tablets.

Thanks everyone! I’ve always used tablets, either fed out of my hand with a treat, or broken up in feed, but my new guy is on to me! lol
I think I’m going to ask for powder.

Definitely powder. Dose is small enough that they will eat it on grain. Somehow not offensive, ever. If they are suspicious about it, I just pour some boiling water on a handful of grain, add bute and stir. Within 2 min you have grain mush that is delicious.

I hate the liquid. Creates a war to get it in them, they are offended and I’m usually wearing some of it. Also extra annoying as it expires faster and inevitably some settles to the bottom of the bottle. You always end up with 10 bottles that are half used but inaccessible to get the bute actually out. Wasteful.

Dora will not eat anything added to her grain, even electrolytes. But she’s quite happy to take a syringe! I have the powder because I can mix it in grain for the happy-to-eat anything retired mare but also add water and syringe it into Dora.

I guess these anecdotes go to show that our horses, like us, have particular taste preferences. Thankfully we have options for administering Bute.

Paste. I don’t want to let my horses’ consumption of it be optional. They get a peppermint right afterwards to hide the taste.

Plus, I’ve never had an issue giving it (eg spitting part of it out.)

I have. Sampled a tiny a very tiny bit on the tip of my finger, and there was no way in heck that stuff tasted like strawberry. Understood multiple horses saying nope. My DD & DH get the paste from the vet, which saves the mixing with corn syrup and hot water that I used to do.

I’ve used the citrus flavored powder mentioned by others very successfully for multiple horses. Never tried strawberry – didn’t know it came in that. Good to know that it may be less palatable than the citrus.

The strawberry flavour was years ago (please don’t ask how many, I don’t really want to admit how old I am). I don’t know if they still use it for flavoured bute or not, but if they do, my horses do not recommend. Both the garbage guts wouldn’t eat it in their feed. So out would come the corn syrup (caro syrup in the US I believe) and a bit of hot water and the dose syringe.

Powder. I buy cheap sugar free applesauce, and mix it with water in a separate container. I pour about the same amount of apple sauce to Bute powder into a dose syringe, shake, and shoot it into their mouths. I do not put it into their feed. If I need them to have bute, I want to make sure that they get it.
