I just put on a pair of equissentials schooling breeches today to go soak an abscess. They had to be scrunched down below my belly, but they were warm and stretch enough that they didn’t bother me, really.
I’m not riding currently (36 weeks, and didn’t really ride once I found out I was pregnant) but I feel like if I wanted to, those would have worked.

Anyone else paranoid about barn cats and toxoplasmosis, or am i the only crazy one?
Today I was out in the windy run in tending to my old horse while the vet worked on an abscess, and I am pretty sure I breathed in a lot of dust and dirt from the footing in there, which the three barn cats have regularly used as a litter box. Now, of course, I’m freaking out.
I thought most of my paranoia left after the first tri… Guess not. For some reason, toxo has been a recurring obsession/fear of mine this whole pregnancy.
I guess here’s where the now weekly doctors appointments will come in handy!!
Ask your vet about the incidence of toxoplasmosis in your area. I don’t think it’s a huge issue unless you’re getting right down in the footing to pick kitty poo. I cleaned the litter box still while pregnant, as my two cats are healthy, indoor pets and we live in an area with a low incidence of toxoplasmosis in the first place. Practice good hand washing if you do handle anything with the footing on it, and don’t eat anything you drop in there.
25 weeks here… I have my glucose test this week, I’m nervous about it… I have developed a bit of a sweet tooth that I never had before being pregnant. My mom had gestational diabetes, now is type 2 diabetic. I wonder how genetic it is… Fingers crossed that I pass…

What did everyone do for breeches? I can’t do mine up comfortably now, and they don’t stay up with the button undone (I have no butt to hold them up!). I’m not riding a lot but I teach in them. I don’t want to wear jeans (which are all uncomfortable anyway, ug).
I have a pair of Kerrits tights which are comfortable but not at all durable (I keep poking holes in mine) or stain resistant. Any suggestions for something similarly comfy/stretchy but much more robust? Tough Riders?
I’m wearing my FITS Tech Tread pull-ons. I find that I am needing as little bulk under my belly as possible while sitting. I can’t do belts at work anymore. And my normal breeches with the zipper and buttons just make too much pressure under there. My current size in the FITS is fine for now (19 weeks) but I think I’ll have to go a size up if I want to continue to try and have the pants fitting up my belly instead of letting the waist go underneath. I’m finding it more comfortable to pull them up my belly at this point.
ACK! JLC You’ve just reminded me! I’ve had a requistion in my purse for my glucose test for the last 3 weeks and haven’t booked it yet. Digging it out now…
JLC, try not to stress too much about the glucose test. I know a bunch of people who failed the one hour version but then passed the three hour.
the stuff they make you drink is nasty! I am sure you will do fine.

Yeah, the drink I had was sort of like flat Orange Crush… I had awful nausea and vomiting through my whole pregnancy, so was grateful for the advice to not go for the glucose test on a day I had other plans (I was trying to squish in a lot of my OB appointments on my lunch breaks, for example). I felt pretty yuck afterwards, so was glad to be able to just head for home once done. Best wishes that it goes smoothly!
I just did that glucose test last week. I thought drinking that sugary kool-aid on an empty stomach was the worst part (even though they take blood 3x). I ended up being fine and I definitely have a sweet tooth. I just tend to be the type who will eat the sweets when they are close and convenient, so if they are all they way at the store, I am too lazy to get them. It was my birthday the Saturday before I took the test too, so I had probably had 3-5 cupcakes on that Sunday before fasting.
I am 28 weeks now and everyone was hassling me at my Friday lesson to stop riding soon. I know it’s a very personal decision. I stopped showing almost right away becuase I was so sick, then stopped jumping at about 4.5 mos, but now I feel great, the best I’ve felt the whole time (though I’m told that will change), no discernible balance issues, I’ve gained maybe 20ish lbs at this point. My plan was to stop after Thanksgiving (totally random deadline) and then my young mare is going to a pasture place for a 2 month vacay and from there to some dressage bootcamp for a month or 2 during and after baby is born to be legged back up. Dressage trainer (who has twin boys of her own) has been more like life as usual, though I do get more walk breaks to do turns on the forehand/haunches. But, after having a really great dressage lesson Saturday, and a week of great flat lessons with the jumper trainer last week, where young mare was near-perfect over poles, very polite (no pun intended) and then did a couple of perfect lead changes calmly on a line, which had been my goal during this flat bootcamp phase, I think I am just gonna be done. I’ve accomplished what I want to accomplish, I was gonna stop in less than 2 weeks anyway, and, although I am not looking forward to the pending boredom of low-impact exercises (prenatal yoga just doesn’t sound that invigorating to me), and am a bit emotional that it will never be “the same”, I feel ok about it. I may end up trail riding or ride-walking in the ring my calm, retired guy (my dr says that’s ok and “low impact” - thankfully he is very familiar with horses and horse people) if I feel like it - it lets my muscles stretch down and has saved me from really any ligament soreness, but we’ll see. End of an era to be sure!
I start hypnobirthing class tonight, so I’ll report back on what that is like. It’s starting to get more real! Hopefully DH and I can pick a name soon! That is tough!
FYI, for those asking about breeches, I have a pair of the Kerrits tights (the kind with the cell phone holster on the thigh) that I like. It’s tough because the belly part fits, but the legs are (or were) kinda big, so even though they were fullseat, I didn’t feel as secure in them. What has ended up working best for me is my pipers, unbuttoned and unzipped with a belly band. I am not the type to be embarrassed if someone can tell my pants are unzipped though (I don’t think they can since my belly is in the way now), so dress at your own risk. I will say I also tried this set-up with my TS breeches and felt more like I was going to bust the zipper with them since they are less stretchy. It worked ok with my Romfh breeches, but the waist on those is higher, so the band didn’t cover as well.

Mine was fruit punch flavored.
Ick!!

I bought a size up that worked for my first trimester into my second, but I haven’t been riding since before I outgrew them (~18 weeks or so)- probably a size or 2 up in some tights or low-rise breeches (below the belly) might work?
Hmm, that’s a good idea but I don’t think it would work for me - my legs and (none-existant) butt haven’t got any bigger, so I think larger sizes would be baggy/fall down. Can try some on at the tack store though, you never know!
How have you found Equissentials in general? Are they quite durable and non-staining?
Hmm, yes, sounds like we have similar problems/discomforts. Are yours low-rise/hipster; is that even an option?

Sounds like the perfect place to ‘pause’!
Do you recommend going high-waisted if possible rather than trying to get something low-riding to fit under the bump? I hadn’t thought of using a belly band with breeches, but duh. Might give an extra few months’ life to my existing pairs.
Fingers crossed for you!
I failed the glucose test first round. I went at 6pm after eating junk pretty much all day lol. I went back first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and did the 3 hour test and was fine. They make everything so flipping stressful when you’re pregnant eh?
The FITS only come with one option for waist height - I feel like they are more of a mid-rise than a low rise. This is them:

I never wear them jumping because I hate jumping with full seat - but - I’m not jumping anymore at this point so these are perfect!

The GTT is optional. There’s some decent reading out there to indicate that in the absence of symptoms, it’s at best, useless. If you have risk factors, or are struggling with symptoms that could be due to GD, then it’s probably not a good idea to opt out. But some doctors just automatically assume that you want the standard tests.
My learning on the GTT was that even if you “fail” the test, there’s not really a lot they do (in the absence of other symptoms or risk factors.) the protocol is to sign you up for ANOTHER test. If you feel crummy after eating a lot of sugar, you’re supposed to cut down on sugar. I would do that anyway!
Not advocating that people skip tests that their doctors recommend, BUT it’s always worth a discussion on “how necessary is this? What will happen if there is a positive result? Is the benefit worth the stress?”
I didn’t do the GTT with either pregnancy. I also didn’t do genetic screening (by 12 weeks, I knew that even a definite positive wasn’t going to change the fact that I was HAVING the baby, and I personally didn’t want the stress of knowing there was a slim possibility of some defects.) I did do ultrasounds. I did ask for the heel prick test, it tests for metabolic disorders in the newborn that can be treated if caught. I didn’t do GBS screening, but I gave permission for antibiotics to be administered if certain risk factors showed up (so my midwife was prepared with the anti biotic at the birth.)

I also haven’t really expanded too much in the leg area (though I’m sure my a$$ is bigger at this point), so pants in my regular size, but unzipped with the belly band work best. I found the lower rise ones to work better because, if you think about it, the pockets/buttons of the pants will be on either side of your belly and it’s just better if they are more toward the down part of the belly than up in the middle area (less bulk). I found the pipers to be the most forgiving, though they do sag a bit (but they sag when they are worn correctly anyway). I have been able to wear in my regular size as well so I didn’t have to “waste” $$ on breeches I won’t wear post baby. I just ordered a pair of the navy/lilac ones with my birthday money. I think they arrive today, which is great since I’m not hacking anymore. Oh well, something to look forward to wearing in Feb/March
Oh yeah, we had our first hypnobirthing class last night. I actually really like it. It is somewhat hippie dippy, but the theories make sense. It’s all about relaxing and releasing fears about giving birth, allowing your body to do what it is supposed to do. I kept thinking about those videos of horses giving birth and how they are just grunting and (mostly) calm about the whole thing. Not that I am a horse giving birth… I think the breathing exercises and affirmations might help when I am back in the jumper ring too. It’s about being in this moment and not worrying about what might or could come next. How many times have I gone clear the first 5 fences, then started to think about how I might go clear and had a rail. Anyway, so far I like it and would recommend it for anyone who wants to prepare for birth and have knowledge of what to expect. DH also really liked it - the theory gives him a job and has him play a role in the birthing as well so I think he appreciates that aspect.
I’ve got the GTT coming up in a couple of weeks and am not looking forward to it at all, I really hate blood tests. I purposely booked it for a quiet day at work though so I can take the whole day off if I feel crap afterwards.
I was looking through lists of stuff to pack in a hospital bag the other day and found one that had a GoPro listed - um, hell no!
As long as the hospital isn’t too far from home, don’t stress too much about the bag. I found out that it really isn’t all that important to follow your list perfectly - my daughter was preparing to make her month-early arrival, and I thought I was going to be told that I was being over anxious and to just go about my day while keeping an eye on things. I work as an RN in the same hospital I delivered at, and was scheduled to work that weekend. I packed my scrubs instead of the things on the list…
My wonderful husband ended up making a run back home to get the things I really should have had!
Ok ladies from the “other” side… I just started really stressing about bringing a new baby home. Give me a new horse or a foal and I got this, but a brandy new tiny human baby, I am scarred to death.
Any tips for the first time mom expecting? I know all babies are different, but what are the first couple of weeks like?
Don’t worry, JLC, I’m exactly the same! I’m more scared of bringing the baby home than giving birth to it!

Kind of surreal, and very interesting, and a little scary. I spent so many hours snuggling and staring at my little guy, learning what all his little reactions meant. Some struggling to figure out breastfeeding, but not too bad. Worrying a little, it was great to have follow up care from my midwife to reassure me.
It took a few weeks for all the hormones to settle back down, and for me to really start feeling like I recognized myself again. Not a bad time, just kind of different.
I was scared and nervous that I wouldn’t be a good mom. It was kind of surprising how instinctive some things were. I don’t know how I knew, but I just KNEW what my little guy needed. Or at least I knew what to try. I was NOT someone with baby experience…
I am also more afraid of having control of a human being after birthing this child than I am of the actual birthing process:)
ugh. 36.5 weeks and have insanely sore lymph nodes and feel achy and gross all over. could use some jingles that I don’t have the flu or something more nefarious this close to the end of it all. GP appointment this afternoon. I can’t afford to be sick when this baby comes! and I can’t afford for me to get a kind of sickness that will affect the little one, either!
