Problems in the horse industry?

Is this a term end project or a short assignment? What percentage of the grade is it? 50%? 30%? 10%? If it’s the first assignment and it’s only worth 10% then you aren’t expected to do that much depth of research. If it’s a final project worth 35% then more is expected.

A nutrition question could actually work quite well.

Short-ish multi step mid-semester project. Worth 50% of the final grade. So not a small project by any means. I’m finding this class weird in terms of organization and weighting of projects. But it’s a summer session; only about 8 weeks long.

Ok that’s a big chunk of the grade. And you are right. It’s odd to get a really important assignment at mid term. Nothing on my syllabus is ever worth 50 %.

I like this idea, I’d read that article! I think there may be a couple relevant experts here, you might be able to find them through searching old posts.

Horse welfare?

I find it interesting to note in a recent Nationally known equestrian tack catalog the number of pages of training aids such as Spurs and whips exceeded the number of pages of reins and girths. Interesting subliminal message? I mean three pages of lunging, dressage, jumping whips vs one page of reins. I noticed that and made me wonder why? I don’t buy three times the number of whips vs reins. The reins are more expensive.

Interesting, what’s being marketed/sold to the consumer.

Burnout and high turnover rates of barn workers (due to horrible pay, hours, and working conditions)

Safesport might be an interesting topic, too. Lots of angles there (for example, how is it affecting AA training programs? Or is anyone paying attention?).

I think a big problem is that stewards are paid by horse show they are working at, so essentially they work for horse show. Horse shows don’t want to cause problems for their clients. These same stewards really need to be monitoring horses getting lunged and what is happening before and after horse shows, when no one is looking

To clarify early morning before show starts and after show ends

If you like the racing angle, perhaps you could look at the different track surfaces - ie poly track versus dirt versus turf and the associated risks/injuries with each type, and recommend the best surface based upon your findings. It does seem that there has been some research about the benefits of each type.

What about issues of commissions and agency in horse sales? Florida and Kentucky have enacted laws that you could talk about and I would imagine professionals have plenty of anecdotal experience to share.
