Prozac Experience?

Any experience with prozac in horses for any of the following issues: rehab/ stall rest anxiety reduction; spookiness under saddle; cribbing/ stall walking? If so, for what issue and what dosages “worked”? What side effects were observed, if any, were they more bold/ obstinate/ aggressive behavior?

No experience but I’ve been curious to following along. I’d also love to know what a standard dose looks like

I am not sure of the dosing exactly because it’s been too long now, but I used it for stall rest/rehab. I’ve used a long lasting (about 4 weeks) IM injection as well as oral liquid compounded version. Last time I had asked my vet about the oral, turns out he hadn’t recorded what dose he had compounded for my horse. :flushed: I know some people who have used tablets (which would be easier to calculate dose but I am not one of those people, so I don’t know).

It did not help with any spookiness. Horse also didn’t have any vices like cribbing or weaving. He would get himself worked up and rear and essentially climb the walls or get fretting/walking and would have trouble hitting the reset button. The Prozac did help with that. He might still have a squeal/rear/buck now and then but could switch off if he got a little crazy without wearing himself out.

Only side effect is that the injectable did cause some noticeable local swelling for the first couple of days. We always gave it in the pectoral muscle, divided between the two, and he’d usually get large boobs for a couple of days. If there was any heat, we’d do one day of topical DMSO/Furazone and then it would usually be fine. No side effects from oral use other than it was oil based and horse hated it and needed peppermint bribes to swallow just a few cc’s. No personality changes. In fact, at first, I didn’t think it was even doing anything. Until about 4 1/2 weeks later and horse was climbing the walls and I called the vet out for another shot.
