Great tip for many items. I have found wasp nests in my hanging winter blankets.
Another vote for expanding foam to fill gaps that are attractive to stinger nests, whether in pipe gates, stone walls, or wood panels. Once it dries the excess can be cut away if it’s unsightly.
Our nemeses here are ground bees (yellow jacket nests literally in the ground) and white headed wasps. Both are determined and hold a grudge. The white headed wasps will follow the beam of a flashlight if you try to spray them at night so you have to visualize, take aim, spray then turn off the light and run like hell.
It amazes me that those little Carolina wrens have survived as a species, because they build nests in some seriously unwise places.
I have had them build nests in the wreaths on my front door, above the lights on my Florida room (we leave the door open for the pets) and in my newspaper delivery box.
I don’t know if this qualifies as dumb or smart, but Robins have nested in this space atop my drainpipe for years. Actually a pretty good spot, as the eaves shelter it from weather.
The nest is now 3 layers deep, newest built on top last year’s.
I like to think it’s the same family
One year Ma Robin chose a window ledge on my back porch.
Also sheltered, but not really safe from predators… Like me
I documented the babies from egg to HowDoTheyAllFit?
Sadly I don’t think my eggs are going to turn into baby birds and perpetuate the species. I didn’t realize the nest was there until after I’d used the trailer two days in a row. Two eggs are now gone and the other two seem to have been abandoned. I feel terrible!
Along the same lines as the mounting block- the minis at my barn have their own paddock and they weren’t eating their hay at all. We thought it was because it was a new batch. My friend went to take it out and mix in some of the old to try and get them to eat when she found out they weren’t eating it because there was a big wasp nest in the hay feeder
Has anyone found anything they can put in their trailer to deter them? Also recently had to kill two nests I found just before loading.
Hang a fake hornet nest in the trailer. Or just shape a brown paper bag to look like one.
Thank you for this post!
In summers past I have used my trailer at least once a week. I would casually check for stinging critter nests but never found anything. Weeeellll, I hadn’t used my trailer since early May, went out there to get ready for a show this weekend. Thinking of this post I was alert to the bast@#ds and sure enough - one small nest in the trailer and I saw them flying in and out of the tongues of my trailer and other trailers parked nearby. Got my spray and annihilated them, I hope!
You never know how you’ve helped people by posting. Thank you again!
