PSA: New Troxel Helmets - non mushroom!

I have been pushing it a bit too long in terms of replacing my helmet, so decided to bite the bullet and go try some on today. I spotted a nice looking, low profile, matte-finish helmet and was going to reach for it when I noticed… It’s a Troxel! I remember the Troxel I had many moons ago as a 12 year old - shiny, bike helmet-y, and of course, as large and mushroomy as a helmet can get. The tack store employee and I reminisced about our shared pasts as young fungi, and I left the store with a lovely new helmet for under $100. Fits like it was made for me, and didn’t cost the $400 I was expecting to drop.

Just FYI in case sprucing up your spring wardrobe includes some new headgear

I work part time in a tack store in a area that has how you say… Very stereotypical teenage girls who show horses. And they are so hell bent of having this exact helmet that is in their hands right this second even if the thing doesn’t fit. What comes with that is they get all mad when I tell them it doesn’t fit and wont do its job. No helmet is ever going to be “attractive” Its there to keep you safe not as an accessory. And even though I love the comfort of my samsheild I still cringed a little bit on the inside when someone actually bought the stone encrusted one that was like 1500 dollars. Your money your choice, but I sometimes wonder if some brands are getting too worried about looks and not about safety.

I guess the thing is, there are many many brands that are safe and certified and make helmets that do not make one look as though one has a second head sitting on top of one’s own perfectly good head - and I’m happy that Troxel has joined the ranks! If, by some tragic circumstance, the only helmet that would safely protect my head was a bulbous, mushroom-type helmet, I would happily pay, wear, and love that helmet. Safety trumps looks every time for me - and for the vast majority of horsefolk I know - but it’s nice when you don’t have to choose one or the other!

And you’re totally right. No helmet is “attractive” when compared to flowing locks streaming romantically behind one as one careens around on one’s steed. On the other hand, a helmeted head is infinitely more attractive than say, a mushed skull, or the hideous aftermath of a TBI.

OP…do you happen to remember the model name for this Troxel?

I have and Avalon for schooling that I really like. I admit - I can’t handle the dial fit system. But the Avalon at least has something called “cinch fit” that isn’t too bad. I’ve gotten tons of compliments on it. It’s a similar look to the GPA Speed Air.

Yes ma’am! It’s the Intrepid. I got it in the matte black finish.

I wish Troxel’s fit my head. I love their price.

I am old enough that I do not worry about being stylish when it comes to a helmet, as long as it fits, I am happy.

Kashmere, can you tell me anything about your head shape? I’m looking at another Troxel model that isn’t sold in stores around here and trying to get an idea of whether it might fit me.

My first Troxel was the limited edition vintage Mickey Mouse one. I LOVED it!

ETA: and yes, I was an adult

Sure  My head relatively round, but not round enough to fit into the GPA helmets. It’s I guess oval-ish, but not a long exaggerated oval, just a slightly oval-y circle (very descriptive). For reference, the last two helmets I wore regularly were a Tipperary Sportage (the original model), and a CO GR8. Both fit very well, but not quiiite as well as this new Troxel, which I attribute to the veeery slightness of my oval qualities. On the other hand, GPAs are too round.
