Thank you - you’re right - I hadn’t scrolled down far enough.
I also have to admit some of you have far superior googling skills than I! I can’t even seem to find where Troxel or Ovation helmets are made.
Yup. This was my first response, since I never saw these off brands in tack stores. Then I looked at Amazon.ca and was totally amazed.
OP you will be safe with any brand that is also being sold by real tack stores in Canada.
On the other hand I think even if the off brand claimed safety rating I wouldn’t believe it any more than I’d believe a Louis Vutoon handbag or Rollex watch!
I remember years ago (don’t know if it is still true) when Dover had uncertified helmets/hats in their catalog, with a notation that they are “items of apparel” and a legal-type note regarding certification. Maybe you can still get those stylish old hunt caps. I have one from the late-50s when they were thought to provide some protection – hard hats we called them.
Have you shopped on a US website to identify what you are interested in? Then maybe shop around via Google to figure out who in Canada has what you want. I’ve bought a few things off Amazon because it was convenient and the price is right. But I wouldn’t use it for a helmet. Sounds like it is too easy to list and possibly misrepresent things on Amazon.CA.

$40 Canadian, they ship to the US and its cheap.
WIlton is local to me, they have excellent customer service.
For what it’s worth, you can check the SEI/ASTM certifications at:

Expand the Equestrian Helmets section and all helmets certified under the 2015 standard are listed, organized by manufacturer.

Actually there are those who use the old hunt-caps for things like showing in-hand or at hound shows - while a small market but at least they’re not mounted. though with some youngsters, I’d be tempted to wear a protective vest and approved helmet LOL
DQ that’s a great website as it also serves as an overview of all available helmet models, though a few brands I have never seen distributed in North America.
OP I want to thank you for raising the question! My first reaction was that of course, everything is certified! I had no idea there were all these no name helmets being sold online.
That said, the Amazon.ca prices for certified helmets don’t seem to beat the sales prices at online tack retailers. Come to think of it, I believe I got my Charles Owen Ayrbrush online at Wilton in Ontario for the best price I could find on the continent so that Trioxel at Wliton someone pointed out above is probably a good deal.
I know about these because I have a friend who does Arabian shows. Riding. She would not even consider wearing an ugly actual protective helmet, they are not the right look or so I am told. From my experience watching her at shows, no one wears an actual protective helmet, at least in her division. They all wear these.
Thank you for finding that one for me! I have found that particular model runs a bit large and I would need to try a small (which they are sold out). I had a medium of that model and I had to use all the extra “adjustable” padding inserts they provide. Thank you though for your effort!
That is awesome! Thank you for sharing!
From Gatehouse (UK ) but interesting videos on testing & development of helmets at
that I don’t get. Shoot we used to have this one horse at our barn who was an absolute PIA in the trailer and clocked me good in the head w/ his head. Never ever again did I set foot in that trailer without a helmet on which was an approved helmet… and having seen some breed in-hand classes - oh my goodness.
Oh back to the OP’s question. Agree with other posters, stick with the name brands and make sure the seller is a reliable seller(if possible) Of the helmets I know of if I were to buy one online I think I’d go for one of the Tipperarys as for me, I think they’re comfortable and from my tack shopgirl days were easy to fit to many different sizes and shaped heads.
Just get the same kind/size that you already have…you know that it fits and you know that it is certified.
Sheesh… skimp on your boots or breeches or gloves or jacket …but please do not skimp on your helmet.
You just can’t put a price on your brains…
Price doesn’t equal better helmet, necessarily. Safety certification matters. But yes, I do want the cheapest certified helmet I can get.
I would email them and ask what they have, Howard is amazing at making it work!
