Quad v. UTV v. ? which one is best for farm?

Another vote for UTV. We have a Polaris Ranger which will tow up to 2000lbs. So piling branches, firewood, etc. on the small utility trailer and pulling it around, is totally doable. We also have a chain drag which I use to drag pastures with or send our 15 year old daughter out to do. It also has a manual dump bed which is great for cleaning stalls or the loafing shed out with and then going and dump on a specific area and then spread a bit. We live on rolling hills and with erosion, didn’t need a spreader as I use the stall refuse to fill in bare spots and washes, so the Ranger with dump bed is much better than a spreader would be for us. Have also used it to haul fencing equipment for fence repair. Stood in the dump bed to cut branches higher than I could reach from a standstill, then load and carry said branches away to the brush pile.

It wasn’t cheap. We bought it used for I think $7800 at 5 yrs old with relatively low hours. Retailed new for almost twice that as it did come with a few other bells and whistles like roof, fold down windshield, radio w/speakers, fans. But has been worth every penny. We first considered an ATV, then decided this was the way to go.

UTV vote here, I like having the bed to haul whatever.

I’m with FatCatFarm. I have a JD Gator with electric lift bed and heavy duty tires. In addition to what FatCatFarm does, I use my gator to drive bales of hay around the 16 acre pasture in the late fall and winter and throw hay piles, we use the bed to cut wood for projects, put tools in the back for whatever project we are doing, take chewy boxes to the barn from the house :D, move hay bales from my hay shed to the barn, and drive it around watching the horses in the field with adult beverages in hand…

BO is on the third Gator. I was helping with chores when she moved into the new barn 20 years ago. Sometimes I dream about hiding it for a few days so the teenagers understand how much more pleasant their lives are. Gas powered with electric bed. 2 wheel drive. Someone increased the capacity of the first one by putting boards around the bed. It handles 4-5 squares bales to toss hay. Clean out paddocks. We can go out to the woods to cut stuff to make Christmas wreaths. The dogs like to accompany us. Sometimes they sleep in it. There is a big almost new JD tractor, and the 18 year old Kubota. They handle haying, snow plowing, dragging arenas, and putting out round bales. A couple of years after Gator #1 she installed heated Nelson waterers. Heavenly!
