Quality rope gag cheeks?

Less than 6 months ago I bought a set of rope gag cheeks from Dover. I use this bit about twice a month, and no more than that. With that amount of use, I have lost one chicago screw and the rope on both sides have frayed. I plan to take them back to Dover, but I was wondering if any one has a suggestion for a higher quality gag cheek piece on the market? I hate to buy another set of the same ones, as obviously the quality is low.

TIA!

I refuse to answer any questions until you update your blog.

I haven’t used them myself, but I have always heard good things about the Nunn Finer gag cheeks. I think that’s what mine are? I bought them in a closing sale a few years ago but haven’t ever used them so I can’t comment to durability.

Nunn Finer for sure. Or, does it have to be rope? I actually prefer the leather as the sliding action on the gag is not as quick.

Will check on the brand I bought many years ago…it was rope and was the rope that mountain climbers use. It was indestructible and guaranteed not to snap!

Alrighty: edited to add that it was the Nunn Finer rope gag. Have lent it to a few people over the years and it still looks new (just not as clean)!

Same thing happened with the ones I bought at Dover :frowning:

The Dy’on ones are really nice (but pricey) but they still look brand spankin new 2 years later, with almost-daily use!

I’m with Belmont.

I am getting back to blogging, I promise. I thought I was all caught up and I would be the best blogger IN THE WHOLE WORLD. And then life happened.

Thanks for the suggestions, I actually went to dover today, and they had the nunn finer in stock. But. They just began carrying a Herm Sprenger version that was less than half the price. Herm Sprenger makes good stuff…so I opted for those. To be continued…

I tried some leather version, it felt like a plain snaffle almost. I use this as a reminder to stay light in front and not drag. I’m tiny, my horses are huge. I’ve got a pretty light hand and the rope seems to be just perfect for my purposes of “hey, when I apply leg and hand, you over there giant horse, you lighten up!”

I’ve had trouble keeping the chicago screws tight as well. Grooms put a dab of super glue on the screw. You can still get it off if needed (as long as just a touch is on it) but it bonds enough to keep them from loosening during use.

I have the Nunn Finer ones. I’ve used the bit like ONCE so I can’t comment as to durability but the quality is quite nice.

Good question…if I can figure out which ones I have, I’ll let you know. Mine have lasted a million years and for a good while saw daily use. All I can tell you is mine are white colored ropes.

i don’t have a brand for you, but try looking up polo gear. That is a really popular bit style with polo players.

Love my Hadfields ones. Choked on the price but still ticking after 3 years of almost daily use.

PSSSST Belmont - I’m back at it.
