Quarter Sheet

I use a wool cooler for warm-up and cool-down, but I don’t ride-ride (trot or canter) in a quarter sheet. Most everyone at my barn uses a cooler on the really cold days; it just seems like a polite transition from blanket to nekkid until their muscles have warmed up and the blood is flowing.

The only issue is that my horse knows what the cooler means, so when I take it off he wants to immediately pick up a trot, and as soon as I walk again he likes to veer over to the fence where his cooler’s hanging and will start nuzzling it.

I once had a horse that turned into the Grinch in cold weather until you put a quarter sheet on him. Once he had a sheet on he returned to his normal sweet self. Of my two current horses, one is indifferent to the quarter sheet, the other does much better if it goes on once the temp starts dropping.

FWIW I just ordered a wool blend quarter sheet from Schneider’s for a good price ($29.99)- it’s 80% wool 20% acrylic

I am curious to see what it is like when it arrives. In the meantime I also have a Rambo Newmarket quarter sheet. It is fleece, but does not seem as staticky as other fleece coolers/quarter sheets I have had. My Newmarket cooler is the same way. I think their fleece is more thick/dense than a lot of other fleece sheets.

I typically use quarter sheets in the 30’s and below.

Once fall comes (October, here in Atlantic Canada - it gets cooler and much more damp!) I start riding my mare in her Back on Track back warmer. She has had SI and general back issues before, and I find this very helpful in preventing those throughout the fall and (very long!) winter.

My old barn had a large but unheated indoor arena. When it was very cold I warmed up with BOT + quarter sheet, and then schooled in just the BOT. Now at my new barn, I will be riding outside for as long as possible into the winter months (I am also wishing for snow instead of ice this winter!). Our indoor arena is basically a 20m circle so I prefer to be in the outdoor arena if at all possible.

I have a heavy fleece quarter sheet, and just acquired a waterproof, fleece lined shedrow quarter sheet as well. I think I will be making great use of both sheets AND my BOT this winter, to keep the Diva happy and healthy!

I am curious about what you think of the Schneider’s. I do like their blankets for the price point.

My horses have half clips until the competition season begins in 2018. I do not use quarter sheets unless it is really cold/windy until then, and once they have full clips I use Quarter Sheets for warm up below 40 degrees.

I used to have a SSTack quarter sheet, not sure if was the same blend, but it was an older school one without the cutout for the rider. It did a nice job for the price, but I think I eventually got rid of it because you couldn’t put it on/take it off without taking off the saddle, so not so practical. It looks like they’re a more useful style now.

Currently I have one of the Newmarket Rambos, which I’ve been really pleased with. Nice thick fleece, not too flappy while riding. I’ll use it on cool days for the whole ride if I’m just flatting but I don’t jump with it on. My horse is currently fully clipped, as we’re finishing up our show season this weekend, so I’ve already used it a few times this year. Generally I’ll go with it to warm up/cool out if it’s below 45. I find the quarter sheet much more convenient for actually riding than a full cooler, which is what I’ve got along at the show this weekend, and it’s rather inconvenient to actually warmup with, since you can’t really do more than walk, but is much more useful for tossing over the horse/rider between rounds, or walking to the ring.

I currently have the Newmarket Rambo which is great but one of my guys is HUGE and needs a larger quarter sheet. I will probably go ahead and get the larger size Rambo but it would be great to have found something for 1/2 that price. I can’t cope with having to take the saddle off in the middle of warming up, especially on a chilly frisky day with the wind blowing!

I have 2 of the SS Tack wool blend quarter sheets in their older model - with the contrasting binding around the edges. The newer ones are cut a little bit smaller and the wool is a little bit more compressed out of the bag. They are super easy to care for - wash in a front load and lay flat to dry.

I put mine under the flaps and not around my legs and use mine every ride <35 for the walk warm up. I’ll keep it on for trotting and cantering and sometimes the whole ride if it’s really cold. I’ve worn holes through it from my heels but some iron on patches will keep it going for a while yet.

I have a really large horse and the newer SS Tack quarter sheets were just a little bit shorter in the drop, but still the XL was pretty big. The XL Rambo quarter sheet didn’t have a long enough drop for me to spend the money on it.

I like the wool blend so much I bought one of the SS Tack coolers with neck - I only use it when it’s really cold because it’s so warm.

I use one with my horse when it’s <30, mostly because I think it looks cute and it keeps MY legs warm

I don’t ride long or hard enough for my horse to get super sweaty, so I typically leave it on the whole ride. He is woolly and usually doesn’t wear a blanket, but I like that the sheet warms him up a little bit before he does any work.

I have a pure wool one and I love it. It’s a great thickness so it never moves around and I just sit on it. And no static. It’s an old school square so I don’t usually put it under the saddle, just in case I do want to take it off mid-ride. It makes my saddle so cozy!

I was actually just looking for another wool one, but only used is in my budget and they are hard to find. I’m thinking about using an old wool blanket I have-- it’s basically the same thing!

If its not super cold I hand walk with Smart Pak’s fleece cooler over the saddle.

When it’s cold I use their quarter sheet. I have an assortment of coolers but I like this brand the best, no static issues that I can see!

For those out shopping, I love my Catago quarter sheet that I ordered from The Equinery in the UK. The red is adorable on my (white) grey mare.

I received my Wool blend quarter sheet from Schneider’s and I think it is a great value for the money ($30). It’s plain looking, but it has a nice drop length and fit better than my Rambo Newmarket sheet. I didn’t notice any static and it seems durable. It’s a nice weight too. I definitely recommend it if you are after a quarter sheet of the wool variety. I think I’ll be using this one the most out of the 3 I have.
