Query RE: Reiners and BMI

Re flexibility - I had quite a few of my own stereotypes shattered in yoga one day when a very overweight (as in 100+ pounds over I’d say) woman just plain rocked the yoga class! I think she was the most flexible person I had seen other than those in cirque de soleil…her balance was also impeccable.

While I, while not thin, but not horribly overweight, struggled…as always.

I admit thinking to myself, “too much biscuits and gravy”. Which made me think of my next unkind thought - hearing Joan Rivers quip years ago that if “Liz Taylor had her ears pierced gravy would come out”. Funny for about a second. But more hurtful.
ack get out of my mind!! four days ago I watched an adult 5ft 4in rider on a narrow 12 hh pony…I thought as I watched her slop and slip all over that too-small-for-her-bottom-saddle on that 3 yo
" you look like gravy being dumped on a biscuit"
and she was tiny, but she was sloppy and floppy and lack core and that poor green pony suffered in her movements for it

I know the real secret (shhhhh) Those guys aren’t really fat… They just couldn’t find a better place to stash their 2,3 and almost 4 million dollars they each have earned riding. The cash is tucked up under their shirts.

It’s sooo refreshing to see people happy in their work and praising their horses and know that they would be just a happy riding, even if they were less successful. Also nice to see “older” riders out there…

Tiny horse? Those extremely fit 14.3-15 hand reining stallions with well sprung ribs probably have 8"-9" cannon bones and weigh 1200# and up. Carrying a fluffy man in a wide tree western saddle, which distributes the weight over a large surface, makes the task being asked safe. Form and function.

Update on weight- a friend of mine owns Mister Montana Nic and she just competed on him in amatuer reining at Congress tonight and scored a 221. I guess size does matter since she weighs maybe 125 pounds soaking wet. I don’t know what Craig scored on him in the Open yesterday.

10:30 p.m. update: Mister Montana Nic tied for first in amatuer reining tonight.

Craig is a friend of mine, and he is not fat.

It IS kind of embarassing. I’m glad those guys got a kick out of themselves at that press conference, meanwhile, the europeans are snickering that in america, even our top athletes are fat!
It’s disrespectful to the horse, and disrespectful to the sport.
I’m sure the Europeans are ACTUALLY probably sitting there wishing they were at the top of that medal podium.

Let the Europeans snicker, I say…

I am thinking maybe we need to get a fund going… and start sending meals to our better riders in other disciplines… we need more heavyweights who can provide hefty results :))

A little off topic, sorry… I couldn’t find another thread to stick this. Those horses were so much fun to watch! And I LOVED how much the riders loved their horses. It was really entertaining…

How old are those horses? I saw someone else’s post about the lack of longevity with these guys. Just curious…

well it was those “fat boys” and a handful of others that have taught the Europeans every SINGLE thing they know about reining, sold them the horses, hosted the clinics and so on…

size or no, those men are WELL respected there for the horsemen they are…I doubt there is much snickering

On the American Team most of the horses were 6 years old. The exception was Mister Montana Nic who is 12.

Even scientists can’t agree or figure it out…

I’m fat but fit too. Riding certainly helps - I’ve lost 15 pounds since I started a year ago. I’ll never be as thin as I was at 25 but I’ve kept my activity level up over the years and am certainly fitter than most of my friends and some folks younger than me.

Live and enjoy - and YAY! for the US team!
