Question about trotting course at tiny local schooling show
What show are you going to? We certainly do have an abundance of schooling shows around here! ;)
We are going to the Nokesville Horse Society show. If I’d had my way we would be going to Summerplace (I LOVE their schooling shows), but she showed at Nokesville’s western shows all last year and she likes them so we’re going with her and her horse’s comfort.

I agree with everyone who’s said to do what’s best for the rider and horse. In this case that is trot in, canter out. Her horse is a western pleasure QH, but picks up the pace nicely over fences and would be a challenge to bring him back to a trot in between. If it wasn’t for the right lead issue I’d be having her canter the course because they get into a nice rhythm.

She was concerned about whether she would be marked down for cantering out. I don’t care if she gets a ribbon as long as she rides well and they both have a good experience. I have explained to her that she goes home with me, not the judge! Still, I think she’s hoping to be in the ribbons since she did really well with him at the western shows last year. So we’ll see. Either way it’ll be fun!

I have a friend that is a judge. She wants to see a consistent gait. If you take the first jump at the trot, trot the whole course. She does not like to see people going back and forth between trotting and cantering
