Are you familiar with SmartOmega by smart pak?
I looked at the GA - it’s a better E supplement than an Omega 3, and for a lot more than you can feed E on its own
I bought a big bucket of chia from HorseTech. My horses prefer it to ground flax. Of course because it’s more expensive.
I have some KER E0-3 oil in the kitchen. He doesn’t particularly care for that either but I’m gonna try sneaking some in on his feed.
Putting chia on my radar. Thank you
He ate about half a tsp of the E03 oil on his feed this am with no hesitation. The low end of the serving size is about 2 tbsp per day so we have a long way to go to work up to an appropriate dosage. But some omega 3s are better than no omega 3s.
I considered switching him to the Purina Omega Match RB, but when I calculate out the NSC in his serving size the TC Balancer Gold he’s on is less NSC due to smaller portion. And the Cu/Zn and mag would be lower in the Purina. And the gut package in the TC has been super for this horse. So sticking with TC for now. He’s getting 1875 IUs of Vit E in the TC Balancer but I understand some/all of it is synthetic so not ideal. I’ll order some Vit E today. I already supplement Biotin. I have chromium yeast on hand too so giving him some of that as well. Need to get him some sugar free electrolytes as well but that’s not as pressing as he’s staying cool in stall and there are some “balanced” electrolytes in the TC Balancer.
Today is his first day of backing down from 2g Bute daily to 1g Bute daily. Fingers crossed.
They use a 50/50 mix, so even with that, it’s still enough (unless he’s huge, I don’t think he is). Is another 1000IU of natural E a problem? Unlikely
He weight tapes at 1440 or 1420 (my memory is shot lol) I know that’s not super accurate but he’s not a little guy either. Probably 16.2 or 16.3 tall and wears 84 blankets.
He’s getting some E from the safe starch too, about 500 IUs.
I’m not panicking on the E. I’ll get some in hopefully by end of week. And his E levels were tested in April as “within normal” so he’s likely ok.
yeah, he’s ok. 1440-2880 give or take, is a good intake, so if it’s the higher end with some synthetic, I wouldn’t worry
My horse likes chia better than flax too. I get it at my grocery.
That’s a relief. One less thing to fret about. And try to convince him to eat lol.
Having a heck of a time finding any tested hay for sale. I can get second cut Tim or O/A out of KY, Tim or O/A out of ID (unknown what cutting it is) or 2nd or 3rd cutting Alicia Bermuda grown up the road. None tested. I usually get some of the local Alicia and some “import” hay. The local hay will be an easier resell if it’s not acceptable. I’m thinking the KY hay maybe a slightly better bet since less likely to be exposed to cool nighttime temps. But I guess it’s all a gamble until it’s tested.
Good to know! He’s eating the E03 oil so far in small amounts. I’ll probably use that up since I have it on hand unless he decides it’s totally unfit for horsey consumption! The chia is on my radar though as an option to try!
If you decide to do the chia, at the time I used it, I found equinechia.com to be the most cost effective. They have a discounted autoship.
Vet recheck went well.
We are cleared for turnout. Starting in short intervals in dry lot.
Vet approved his toe length. She concurred that bi weekly toe trims might be helpful. She said I could try different inserts if I liked, but felt he was walking well as is.
Our main goal is to try and get more sole depth. Next recheck in a month.
Thanks for this.
