'Rachel Alexandra': back to work in 2010

Glad they decided to keep Calvin.

My problem with Jackson is he seems to be a bit of a hypocrite— dual agency and disclosure???
Well, how about disclosing the "undisclosed " purchase price??

The enquiring minds want to know, Jess, just how much money are you willing to pay to buy a horse you can’t outrun with one of your own??
Disclosure is only about the buyer and seller knowing where the money goes, not about having to announce every horse sale amount to the press.

What a shame. That she’s going to ASSmussen and that she’s running in the Preakness. I’d hoped to see her stay in the female races which would set up a showdown between her and Zenyatta. Betting now that that will never happen. Glad that Calvin gets to stay on her though.

According to Calvin’s mom-in-law:
The new owners are trying to get RA into the Belmont. If that happens, Calvin will be the rider.
In that case, he obviously will not be riding MTB and the owners have stated they don’t want anyone else on MTB.
So my guess is MTB will not run?
Not sure how I feel about this, was really looking forward to Calvin going for the triple crown…dang it, there go our plans for a fundraiser opportunity!
Can anyone say HEARTBURN?

Also, Calvin will be on Jay Leno next Tuesday night.

Running in the Preakness doesn’t mean she can’t meet up with Zenyatta at some point. Most likely in the Breeder’s Cup CLASSIC if this keeps up!

I know that-- I really was asking the second part of my question–

How much money is Jess Jackson willing to pay for a horse that one of his own can’t outrun-- cause he is a sore loser.

That makes no sense whatsoever.

There’s no reason thatboth RA and Zenyatta couldn’t be running against males. RA could concievably wait till the latter part of the year, as she’s a 3yo, but she’s so far ahead of the rest of her sex they may as well go for any and all of the Preakness/Belmont/Travers.
Zenyatta however has no excuse, every one of her remaining races should be in open company. If she continues to stay in f/m races then I’ll gladly cheer against her.

Stonestreet Stables, majority owner of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, and partner Harold T. McCormick announced May 8 that Calvin Borel has agreed to ride Kentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra for the current racing season.

Also, Stonestreet said it plans to run the filly in the May 16 Preakness Stakes (gr. I).
I don’t like that. :frowning:
Of course, I think she’s ahead of the guys at this point, and she sure as hell has no competition from the distaffers.
If the big girl loses, Jackson’s less likely than others to make up an injury and retire her two days later. Since he’s keeping her to breed himself, and not looking to sell her as a broodmare at the November sales, it won’t matter if her value drops as a result of a loss.

Huh. I am confused, it would appear.

There are many people in horse racing who seem like sore losers but Jess Jackson certainly isn’t one of them.

I just don’t get the rancor towards Jackson. No, I don’t agree with taking the filly from Wiggins, but it happens ALL THE TIME in racing, and Wiggins got a nice little cut, I’m sure. He’s a big boy, playing an adult’s game.
My biggest beef with Jackson is his choice of trainer; I’m not an Asmussen fan.
I have never met JJ, don’t know anyone who has. Maybe he’s awkward in the spotlight, I don’t know. Perhaps he’s really an assclam. Don’t know that either. Can’t presume. Yes, he ruffled a lot of feathers by jumping in and loudly proclaiming the things he thinks are wrong with racing. No one likes the new person who jumps in the pool and splashes everyone. It takes time to gain respect and influence, and I do think perhaps he thought he would gain both automatically by spending, spending, spending.
I’m willing to see where he’s headed. And just because he has cash to burn doesn’t make it right to rip him off with artificially inflated prices.
The last thing racing needs to do right now is chase off someone like Jackson, who, at least for now, appears to really want to help save racing. That’s the equivalent of eating your own young, something this sport can ill afford right now.

My thoughts exactly. I also don’t understand the hostility toward Jackson. To me it reeks of elitism. So he’s new to the sport, so what. As far as I know, he does right by his horses, and that’s a lot more than can be said of many others.

One of the richest owners in the sport buys the best racehorse in the US. Plans to eventually breed her to Horse of the Year. Chooses his own trainer.

Where, exactly, is the controversy? Certainly there is nothing “sad” about it.

I’m with Mara. Other than his choice of trainer, I have no beef with Mr Jackson at all - in fact rather the opposite! Since taking on the entrenched interests with their petty little axes to grind and calling it in public like it lies are, neither of them, ummmm, let’s say … entirely unfamiliar territory to me… I say GO FOR IT, Mr. Jackson, best of luck with the filly, and if I ever DO have the good fortune to meet you, after I get your autograph, we may be having an interesting little chat about trainers.

Well, first it messes with the Derby winner’s jockey if she’s able to get into the Preakness. Second, see upthread for why people are not thrilled with the trainer she’s going to. Third–let’s wait and see if Curlin gets ANY mare in foal before getting too excited (and I’d prefer if he holds off for a year or two and keeps her as a RACEhorse.)

First: the Derby winner’s jockey didn’t get “messed with”. He’s a big boy and he made his own decision.

Second: Ever noticed that all the Assmussen bashers have never met him? Never had a horse with him? Never been up-close-and-personal and watched him train? It’s pretty easy to denigrate someone from afar on the internet.

Third: In nothing that I’ve read has Jess Jackson spoken about retiring RA instead of keeping her “as a RACEhorse.”

I guess Claire Novak was willing to kiss goodbye any chance for being in the JJ fan club

Excerpt

Because now, instead of picking up the phone or stopping by the barn and talking directly with the person involved with the horse, I’ll be talking to the assistant of the assistant of the PR director for the firm that handles Jackson’s publicity. And instead of feeding peppermints to the filly, I’ll be booking my time at the barn through the approval of a highly-capable security squad of rotating criminal justice specialists and former military experts. Curlin campaign round two, here we go.

Could you explain that one for me, I’m clearly not getting it.
A top jockey having the choice of multiple mounts, what’s exactly new about that? Are you suggesting that the horse should not be entered because it means it may cause the jock to not ride a different horse?
I’m lost here.

Interesting if Mike Smith gets MTB-- who you gonna call? Maybe gf Chantal for advice?
