You’d think, but, I have a horse in the five figures available for sale (which I guess some might not consider high dollar, but I do). I’ve got him listed on a dozen different typically used free and paid websites, as well as Facebook. Facebook has produced the VAST majority of inquiries.
@mmeqcenter that is high dollars to me too, but I admit I was thinking more the six figure type, the type that sells via word of mouth between trainers.
I hope your sale goes smoothly.
I also forgot to mention, YEARS ago there was a horse ?publication? who used to raffle off a horse ?once a month? I think it was more of a free sweepstakes. Does anyone else remember that?? I always thought it was sort of odd.
I don’t object to FB because of the idiots - I don’t like it because as a potential buyer, it is difficult to search everything that’s available by specific criteria. When I do search, a lot of the hits are way outdated. I also don’t like having to find and join groups and see the posts I am not interested in - especially when I am interested in buying something and don’t want to turn off posts entirely for fear of missing out on what I am looking for. Finally, FB doesn’t show me everything - I just went to one sales group I belong to and saw some posts that had showed up in my feed and others that haven’t. It’s all too hit or miss for me. I really like a platform like Dreamhorse a lot better.
ETA: Also, too damn many groups for the same or similar purposes resulting in people posting same horse in every group they belong to which makes more spam for me to signore.

I suspect this vet doesn’t know the terms of the joints then
I don’t know what a 3 year old cursory vetting report with no films is supposed to prove anyway. It’s not terribly helpful. 3 months ago this horse had effusion in both fronts. Okay. Is she sound TODAY and has anyone bothered to try to figure out why? It honestly leaves me with more questions than answers/
One thing that the seller forgot to add to the “rules” was what happens if she only sells a handful of tickets. Is she still going to raffle the horse? The whole thing is really poorly thought out.
She says she got a permit?!
So why don’t you just use Dreamhorse?
I do, but a lot of horses don’t get listed there any more. There are also fewer picture ads as compared to before FB became a selling platform - I assume because of the cost to the seller.
Totally agree with you that searchable sites that require basic data are so much easier to deal with than FB. But the horses are on FB. So… there’s no avoiding it
Unfortunately seems to be true. But all this silliness of selling halters with horses attached wears thin… could selling horses on FB either be ok or not and stop with the trying to disguise it?
She claims she bought an $85 permit to hold a raffle…Seeing as she’s sold only a handful of tickets I doubt she’ll complete the raffle and lose that $85 (if she’s telling the truth). Pretty much everyone around here knows her and stays clear of her and her horses…don t think a raffle will help her sales unless she advertises on groups not in the NE.
Made a huge deal that it was a 22k horse well I could raffle my horse off and claim he was 222k…kind of silly.
Maybe she got a permit but once I brought up the legality I got blocked so I dont know.
There are a couple of laws in play here. First, you need to have a permit to hold an auction/raffle. She claims that she has that. Second, as I stated, I believe there is still a law that forbids animals as prizes in these raffles. So she would still run afoul of that one.
Timely thread! I have seen 3 “horse raffles” pop up on FB in the last week or two. 3 different sellers, 3 different states.
This must be the new thing.
Also, I hate FB as a way to look for horses. You can’t filter your search criteria, and often I can’t remember exact location/group where I saw a particular ad that I was interested in.
But I’ve accepted it’s the way of the world now and sellers won’t go back to paid listings on sales websites.
Those tickets are pretty pricey. Up there with the cost of the Win a $3 million Dream Home raffles for the children’s hospital.
My guess is, a horse that’s being rafflef for $100 tickets is worth about $100.
Watch for Facebook to crack down on this soon
There was a local place raffling horses on Facebook recently ($200 tickets), but I just checked and all those posts appear to be removed…
It is, um, an interesting place - marketing primarily draft horses, and virtually all the humans in the photos are barefoot or in flip-flops. Riding videos in flip-flops. And the pin-fired STB was described as “not pin fired - he is freeze branded”.
I know what place you’re talking about it and not only does it look like hell on wheels around there (un helmeted people jumping piles of junk)… they manage to take these weird black background photographs that make the horse look like it’s on mars or missing parts of its body. They’re really speshul
Apparently attempting to raffle off unsellable or undesirable horses is a common occurence in my area on Facebook horse sale groups. I haven’t seen one be successful yet. Spots range from $25 a piece to a couple hundred a piece. At least from what I have seen, it’s a last ditch effort to place a horse they can’t seem to sell. I have always wondered what happens if the spots aren’t all filled up. I also worry about where those horses go. Just because someone has $25 for a ticket certainly doesn’t mean they have the means to care for a horse properly.
That concerns me as well
