Rain Rot covering whole body... any miracle cures??

As mentioned above, rain rot is bacterial.

My 2 day cure is to massage MTG into the crusts and leave on for several hours or overnight. Next day curry with a metal curry or shedding blade and the crusts will come right off. Shampoo with chlorhexidene. My favorite at the moment is the CVS brand wound wash. It’s clear and suds up and gentle enough to be left on without rinsing.

All 3 of mine suddenly presented with hives then rain rot 2 weeks ago. I suspect we had an outbreak of midges. The fly population exploded that week, too. I messed about with Eqyss and Listerene for a few days then went back to that nasty-smelling old faithful, MTG.

Hives are what I thought he had at first until they formed into the rain rot. Iv been using the medicated shampoo from the vet and still my MTG and it seems to be helping. He also is just started to grow his winter coat enough that I think I may be able to body clip in the near future which will really help.

Hes only 4, hasnt had any signs at all of PPID. He really hasnt even seemed to have any symptoms of anything, hes keeping his weight well, good appetite. The only other difficulty were dealing with at the time is constantly pulling our shoes off! haha cant win!

My pony used to get epic rain rot. He’s allergic to the universe so it’s his dex courses that lead to it. We live life finding a balance of discouraging his immune system to a certain degree without going too far.

Systemic antibiotics are the miracle cure.

Shampoo or rinse with chlorhexidine. That’s science. It will take out bacterial and fungus and its gentle on living tissue. I buy chlorhexidine dog shampoo from Tractor Supply. Love the wound wash idea another poster had. You can also order the generic solution that can be mixed with water (the name brand stuff is $$$$) or most vet clinics are happy to give you a Tupperware full from their jug

I wonder if it could be ringworm. My horses got it recently and it was much worse in the young ones. It does come up like small hives and then turns into scabs that rub off. My vet gave me some antifungal meds and I treated with with hibitaine scrub and ointment. Apparently young horses get it worse because their immune systems aren’t as developed. My older horse got just one scab. It’s been a nightmare, thank goodness I only have a few horses, it’s very infectious

I always panic about ringworm first because I had to deal with that once - nightmare is right! it was awful. Luckily we ruled that out from the get go so I dodged that bullet!
